Halifax Stanfield International Airport is the principal commercial airport for Atlantic Canada and the largest airport in the region by passenger volume, serving the roughly 2.4M residents of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Located 20 mi (32 km) northeast of downtown Halifax at 477 ft (145 m) elevation in the community of Enfield, YHZ handles 96 routes across 56 destinations through 33 airlines. The airport is named for former Nova Scotia Premier and Canadian finance minister Robert Stanfield and is operated by the not-for-profit Halifax International Airport Authority. YHZ functions as a secondary hub for Air Canada, WestJet, and Porter Airlines, with substantial operations by Flair and Lynx supporting the Canadian low-cost segment. International service is notably broad for an airport of this size: Condor (to Frankfurt, making YHZ a long-running German leisure-route terminus), Icelandair (Reykjavík), Air Transat, WestJet (with UK, Caribbean, and European seasonal routes), Sunwing, Provincial Airlines, and regional carriers PAL Airlines, Pascan, and Air Saint-Pierre (to Saint-Pierre and Miquelon — one of the more unusual international destinations in Canadian scheduled service). U.S. carriers American, Delta, and United provide daily service to Boston, New York–LaGuardia, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington–Reagan, and other northeastern hubs. YHZ is the closest major North American airport to Europe by great-circle distance and is routinely used as a transatlantic emergency diversion alternate, most famously during Operation Yellow Ribbon on September 11, 2001. The airfield has two asphalt runways — 05/23 at 10,500 ft (3,200 m) and 14/32 at 7,700 ft (2,347 m) — both capable of full widebody operations. A single unified terminal handles all commercial traffic, organized around a central check-in hall feeding two concourses. The airport is the headquarters of IMP Aerospace, a major Canadian maintenance-repair-overhaul (MRO) operator, and hosts significant Transport Canada, Department of National Defence, and Coast Guard aviation support activity given the Halifax region's role as home of Canada's Atlantic Fleet and primary Atlantic search-and-rescue coordination center.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Halifax

Public transportation

Halifax Transit operates MetroX Route 320 as a dedicated express coach service connecting YHZ to the Albemarle Street Terminal in downtown Halifax and Dartmouth. Service runs roughly every 30–60 min from early morning to late evening with journey times of 45–60 min depending on stops and traffic. Fare is CAD 4.50 cash (exact change required) or via transit pass and mobile app. The bus stop is at the curb directly outside arrivals. This is the principal budget option, though luggage space is limited on peak-hour services.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed airport taxis and limousines are available 24/7 just outside the arrivals area at the designated taxi rank. A fixed flat fare of approximately CAD 63 applies for most trips to central Halifax (30–40 min), with other destinations metered — typical fares are CAD 80–100 to Dartmouth, CAD 50–70 to Bedford and Sackville, CAD 90–130 to Peggy's Cove, and CAD 100–140 to the Annapolis Valley wineries. Uber and Lyft operate with designated pickup zones at arrivals and are typically 15–25% cheaper than metered taxis.

Rental cars

Several major rental agencies — Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Alamo — maintain counters and vehicles on Level P1 of the airport parkade, accessible via a covered pedway from the terminal. Pre-booking is highly recommended, especially during summer peak (June–September) when tourism demand for Cabot Trail and South Shore drives significantly constrained availability. A valid driver license and credit card are required; most foreign licenses are accepted for stays under 90 days without International Driving Permit. Highway 102 provides direct 25-min access southbound to central Halifax.
