Zhukovsky International Airport is the newest of Moscow's four international airports (alongside Sheremetyevo SVO, Domodedovo DME, and Vnukovo VKO) and was developed from the legendary Gromov Flight Research Institute airfield, home to Soviet flight-testing since 1941. Opened to civil commercial traffic in 2016, ZIA handles 35 scheduled routes to 31 nonstop destinations operated by five airlines, with a network heavily focused on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Turkey, the Gulf, and Southeast Asia. The airport operates the single longest runway serving Moscow: a 15,092 ft (4,600 m) concrete strip 12/30, 230 ft (70 m) wide, originally built to support experimental test flights of the Tupolev Tu-144, Sukhoi T-50/Su-57, and Mil Mi-26 helicopter. At 377 ft (115 m) elevation, this is the longest civil runway in Europe and one of the longest in the world. The runway's extraordinary length and width continue to support both civil operations and adjacent test-flight activity at the Gromov Institute. Internationally significant as a case study in post-sanctions aviation restructuring: ZIA was originally positioned by Ramport Aero (a joint Russian–Lithuanian venture) as a low-cost complement to Moscow's three legacy airports and attracted Ural Airlines, Pegasus, and Kyrgyz operators. Following the 2022 suspension of most Western aviation services to Russia, ZIA's network has concentrated on Central Asian, Turkish, Iranian, and UAE destinations, with EGYR and Red Wings handling a significant share of scheduled service. The airport sits 36 km (22 mi) southeast of central Moscow in the city of Zhukovsky, named for aerodynamic pioneer Nikolai Zhukovsky, and its dual civil-military-R&D character is unique among Moscow's commercial airports.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Moscow

Public transportation

Transfer from ZIA to Moscow requires a multi-leg public transit combination. Express bus No. 441E runs direct to Kotelniki metro station on the Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya line in 30–40 minutes. Alternatively a shuttle from the terminal to Otdykh railway platform connects to Sputnik express trains (40 min) or suburban elektrichka trains (55 min) into Kazansky Railway Station. Combined journey time to central Moscow runs 60–90 minutes.

Taxis & rideshare

Yandex.Go and official airport taxis operate from dispatch stands inside the arrivals hall. Metered in-app fares to central Moscow run RUB 2,500–4,500 on a 60–90 minute trip in normal traffic, with significantly longer runtimes during evening rush. Cash-only unofficial drivers at the curb are unregulated and are not recommended.

Rental cars

Several Russian and partner rental firms operate desks in the arrivals area; major Western brands (Hertz, Avis) have reduced or suspended Moscow operations following 2022 sanctions. Pre-booking online is strongly advised. An International Driving Permit in addition to the national licence is required. The M5 Ural Highway provides the principal road connection to Moscow via the MKAD ring road.
