Adnan Menderes International Airport is the primary airport serving Izmir, Turkey's third-largest city by population, and the gateway for the entire Aegean coast including the ancient city of Ephesus, the beach resorts of Kusadasi and Cesme, the archaeological regions of Bergama and Pamukkale, and the Greek-islands ferry market at Cesme to Chios. Located in Gaziemir 11 mi (18 km) south of central Izmir at 412 ft (126 m) elevation, ADB handles 163 routes across 99 destinations through 24 airlines — making it one of Turkey's busiest regional airports behind the Istanbul pair (IST/SAW) and Antalya (AYT). Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, and AJet operate the core domestic and regional network, with Pegasus maintaining one of its largest bases at ADB and operating the bulk of European leisure service. International service is unusually diverse for a secondary Turkish airport: Lufthansa, KLM, Austrian, SunExpress, Eurowings, Wizz Air, Condor, Corendon Dutch, Transavia, Ryanair, British Airways, easyJet, and Turkish Airlines deliver dense connectivity to the main German (Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Stuttgart, Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne), Dutch (Amsterdam, Rotterdam), Austrian (Vienna), Belgian, UK, Swiss, and Russian origin markets. German-origin traffic is particularly heavy, reflecting Izmir's historical importance in Turkish-German migration patterns since the 1960s guest-worker programs. Two parallel 10,630 ft (3,240 m) runways — 16L/34R (asphalt) and 16R/34L (concrete) — enable independent operations and support any current civil aircraft including widebody charters and scheduled 787 and A330 flights. The airport operates two terminals: T1 (2006, redeveloped 2014) for domestic flights, and T2 (2014) — a TAV-designed international terminal that has won multiple international architecture awards for its distinctive wave-roof design inspired by the Aegean coastline. Total passenger throughput exceeded 14.5M in 2024. ADB is also one of the few Turkish airports with a direct commuter rail link to the city center, giving Izmir-bound travelers a genuine public-transit option rather than just shuttle buses.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Gaziemir

Public transportation

The IZBAN commuter rail has a dedicated station directly beneath the airport terminal, running both north (to Alsancak, Karsiyaka, and onward to Aliaga) and south (toward Selcuk, near Ephesus). Journey time to Alsancak (central Izmir) is approximately 35–45 minutes; fare is TRY 35 paid via the Izmirim Kart contactless card sold at station machines. Trains run every 15–30 minutes from 05:00 to 00:00. Havas airport coaches run to central Izmir (Alsancak, Karsiyaka) and onward to Cesme, Alacati, and Kusadasi. Municipal ESHOT Routes 202, 204, and 206 provide the lowest-cost option.

Taxis & rideshare

Official metered taxis queue 24/7 outside the arrivals halls of both T1 and T2. Typical trips run TRY 400–600 to central Izmir (30–45 min), TRY 650–900 to Cesme (80–100 min), TRY 550–750 to Kusadasi (60–80 min), and TRY 1,200–1,600 to Pamukkale (3 h). A night surcharge (+50%) applies from midnight to 06:00. Uber and BiTaksi offer app-based alternatives with similar pricing.

Rental cars

Major international agencies — Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise, Budget, Europcar — and Turkish operators Garenta, Cizgi, and Economy have desks in the arrivals halls of both terminals, with vehicles in the adjacent parking structure. Self-drive is common among the German and Dutch tourist traffic heading to the Aegean resort coast. An International Driving Permit is accepted alongside the home-country license for stays under six months; credit-card deposit required.
