Banjul International Airport, at Yundum on the south bank of the Gambia River 24 km from the capital, is the sole international airport serving The Gambia — the African continent's smallest mainland country — and is built around a runway with an outsized strategic history. The 3,600 m (11,811 ft) asphalt strip was designated by NASA from 1988 onward as an official Space Shuttle Transoceanic Abort Landing site, one of only a handful of such runways in Africa, and its length and load-bearing capacity remain substantially over-specified for the country's commercial traffic. That runway pedigree plus sole-international-gateway status for a country of roughly 2.6 million place BJL in the 534 largest. About 13 airlines operate 19 routes to 15 destinations (2026). Royal Air Maroc, Turkish Airlines, Brussels Airlines, TUI fly Belgium, Corendon, Vueling, and charter operators such as TUI Airways serve the European leisure schedule from Casablanca, Istanbul, Brussels, and northern European leisure origins; Ethiopian, ASKY, Air Sénégal, and Kenya Airways cover the African network. Annual throughput of roughly 400,000–500,000 passengers is heavily seasonal, peaking sharply between November and March during the European winter-sun charter window that underpins Gambian tourism. The terminal's landmark 'Arch 22' style roofline, designed in the 1990s, was refurbished in the 2010s under a partial renovation programme. BJL is also designated as the widebody alternate for Dakar-Diass and functions as a trans-Atlantic refuelling and diversion point for smaller jets transiting between West Africa and the Americas. Its combination of Shuttle-grade runway, charter-dominated commercial profile, and strategic West African position gives it operational stature beyond its modest passenger count.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Yundum

Public transportation

There is no direct scheduled public bus or rail service from the terminal. Shared minibuses known as 'gele-geles' operate on the main highway outside the airport grounds but are not recommended for first-time visitors with luggage due to crowding and irregular schedules.

Taxis & rideshare

Official green tourist taxis queue 24/7 outside arrivals. Fares to major coastal resort areas (Kololi, Kotu, Senegambia) are regulated and typically posted on a fare board — roughly GMD 1,000–1,500 for the 25–35 minute drive. Agree the price before departure.

Rental cars

Avis and local operators maintain counters in the arrivals hall. Advance booking during peak charter-season weeks is advised. An International Driving Permit may be required. Self-drive is feasible for the coastal strip but less common in the interior.
