Amílcar Cabral International is Cape Verde's principal long-haul gateway and — historically — one of the most important transatlantic refueling airports in West Africa, a role rooted in the 1970s when propeller-age and early jet aircraft routinely stopped on Sal Island to top up between Europe and South America or West Africa and the Caribbean. The airport is named for Amílcar Cabral, the independence-era theorist and co-founder of the PAIGC who led Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau's liberation from Portuguese rule. Although modern long-range aircraft have eliminated the refueling role, SID remains commercially significant as the main beach-tourism gateway to the Cape Verde archipelago. A single 3,000 m (9,843 ft) runway on the otherwise arid and sparsely populated island of Sal supports approximately 69 routes to 51 destinations across 26 airlines, an unusually international carrier mix for a destination of this size. Principal traffic comes from European leisure demand: TUI fly (UK, Netherlands, Belgium), Neos, TAP Air Portugal, Binter Canarias, EasyJet, Corendon, SunExpress, Eurowings, Jet2, and various charter operators dominate the schedule. Sal's reliable trade winds and sunshine have made Santa Maria beach one of Europe's most consistent winter-sun destinations; kitesurfing at Kite Beach adds a year-round sports-tourism component. Cape Verde's geographic position — the archipelago sits roughly 570 km off the West African coast — gives SID continued strategic value for aircraft crossing the central Atlantic; it remains a technical-stop option for smaller business jets and specific ferry flights. The airport is operated under Vinci Airports concession since 2022. It is one of seven scheduled airports in the archipelago but handles the majority of international traffic; Praia (RAI) is the main inter-island and government-related hub. Passenger traffic reached approximately 1.3M in 2023.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Espargos

Public transportation

No formal public bus or shuttle network serves the airport. The primary local transit is the 'aluguer' — shared minibuses or pick-up trucks — which do not run on fixed schedules and require walking to the main road. They are not a practical option for arriving travelers with luggage. Most visitors use taxis or resort transfers arranged in advance.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis wait 24/7 outside Arrivals and operate on fixed-rate fares to main destinations on Sal. A trip to Santa Maria, where most of the island's hotels and resorts cluster, takes 20–25 minutes and costs approximately 12–15 EUR by day or 15–20 EUR at night. Confirm the fare with the driver before departure. Bank cards are accepted only inconsistently; cash in euros or escudos is safer.

Rental cars

Several rental agencies including international brands and local Cape Verdean operators maintain desks in Arrivals. Renting a car provides the flexibility to explore Sal's quieter beaches (Buracona, Shark Bay, Pedra de Lume salt crater) at leisure. Pre-booking in peak winter season is advisable. An International Driving Permit alongside a valid national license is required; roads are generally in good condition but unpaved tracks are common inland.
