Vienna International Airport (VIE) sits at the hinge between Western Europe and the former Habsburg territories, a position that has defined its scale and network character since the Iron Curtain fell. Located 18 km (11 mi) southeast of central Vienna in Schwechat, the airport handled a record 31.7M passengers in 2024, cementing its place as the largest airport in Austria and one of the top twenty in Europe. The 600 ft (183 m) elevation and two intersecting runways (11/29 at 11,483 ft and 16/34 at 11,811 ft) handle a combined movement rate well above 70 aircraft per hour in peak wave structure. Austrian Airlines, a Lufthansa Group carrier, bases its entire long-haul fleet here and has shaped VIE into Central Europe's principal feeder point for secondary cities in the CIS, the Caucasus, Iran, and the Balkans. The network reaches more than 190 destinations in over 75 countries — a reach disproportionate to Austria's population of 9 million, justified by transfer traffic that regularly exceeds 30% of the total. Wizz Air and Ryanair have built Vienna into one of their largest European bases, adding volume on leisure corridors to the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The single consolidated terminal layout (T1, T1A, T2, T3) funnels traffic through a central airside node where Pier East — a 2012 expansion — added 17 contact stands sized for twin-aisle widebodies. A third parallel runway, planned since the 1990s and cleared through Austria's constitutional court in 2017, remains in planning and is intended to lift the capacity ceiling past 40M. The airport's Star Alliance transfer product, Schengen-compact geography, and position roughly equidistant from Frankfurt, Istanbul, and Moscow give VIE an east-west arbitrage role no other EU hub can quite match.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Vienna

Public transportation

The City Airport Train (CAT) runs non-stop between VIE and Wien Mitte in 16 minutes at a flat EUR 14.90 one-way, with 30-minute headways from 05:36 to 23:36. The parallel S7 S-Bahn covers the same corridor in 25 minutes for EUR 4.30 and integrates with the Vienna transit network. Railjet and ICE long-distance trains call at the airport station every 30 minutes, offering one-seat rides to Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Budapest, and Bratislava without backtracking into the city.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis queue on the arrivals level outside Terminal 3, Exit 3 and Exit 4, operating on meter with a published city-center fare of roughly EUR 36–45 and a 20-to-30-minute runtime in off-peak traffic. Airport Driver and C&K Airport Service offer flat-rate pre-booked transfers at EUR 32–38 for sedans and EUR 55–65 for vans. Uber and Bolt are permitted and typically undercut metered taxis outside peak demand windows.

Rental cars

All rental brands consolidate in the Parking Garage 3 facility, a short covered walk from the arrivals hall via Terminal 3. Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise, and Buchbinder operate staffed counters open from 06:00 to 23:00 with pick-up directly in the garage. Transfer time from curbside to vehicle averages under eight minutes, and the A4 motorway on-ramp to central Vienna or the Hungarian border is reached within three minutes of exiting the garage.
