Podgorica Airport (TGD) is Montenegro's largest airport and the main aviation gateway to the country's capital. Located in Golubovci municipality 11 km (7 mi) south of central Podgorica at 141 ft (43 m) elevation on the Zeta plain between the Morača and Cijevna rivers, the airport shares infrastructure with the Podgorica Golubovci Airbase of the Montenegrin Air Force. A single 8,202-ft (2,500-m) asphalt runway 18/36 handles narrowbody and small widebody traffic, with full-load capability for most European operators. The airport's legacy IATA code TGD derives from its former name, Titograd - the Yugoslav-era designation for Podgorica between 1946 and 1992. TGD serves 46 routes to 37 destinations on 19 airlines (2026), with home carrier Air Montenegro and a broad slate of European operators including Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Austrian, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Air Serbia, Swiss and LOT linking Podgorica to Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, Belgrade, Rome, Paris, Zurich, Moscow and Ljubljana. Strong Montenegrin diaspora links with Germany, Switzerland and Italy drive significant VFR traffic. Operated by state enterprise Airports of Montenegro alongside Tivat Airport (TIV) on the coast, TGD is the country's primary year-round airport while Tivat dominates the summer coastal leisure season. A long-delayed airport-system concession process - aimed at attracting a major European operator to modernise both airports - has been Montenegro's most consequential infrastructure decision of the decade. A new passenger terminal is planned to lift capacity above the current 1.5 million annual passengers and to support the country's NATO-era positioning as a Balkan connecting point. Podgorica joined NATO in 2017 and has since become a Western security partner on the Adriatic, adding a modest but real defence-aviation dimension to TGD's role. The airport is equipped with a CAT I ILS and is the only Montenegrin airport operating year-round on a 24-hour basis, making it the country's sole alternate for medical-evacuation flights and diplomatic visits during adverse winter weather on the coast.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Podgorica

Public transportation

A limited public bus service links the airport to Podgorica's main bus station (Autobuska Stanica), but departures are infrequent and should be checked against current schedules. A cheaper but less convenient alternative is the Aerodrom railway halt on the Podgorica-Bar line, a 10-15 minute walk from the terminal, with a handful of trains daily.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed airport taxis queue directly outside arrivals 24/7 and operate on a fixed 12-15 EUR fare to central Podgorica, with journey times of 15-20 minutes. For coastal destinations, negotiated flat rates apply: Budva typically runs 45-60 EUR (50 km / 31 mi) and Kotor 60-80 EUR. Always confirm the fare with the driver before departure.

Rental cars

Sixt, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise and multiple local operators staff counters in the arrivals hall. Montenegro's compact size (160 km / 100 mi tip to tip) makes self-drive particularly attractive for combining the capital with Kotor Bay, Durmitor National Park and Skadar Lake. EU licences are accepted directly; non-EU drivers should carry an International Driving Permit.
