Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) is Bosnia and Herzegovina's busiest airport and the country's primary aviation gateway. Located in the Ilidža suburb 12 km (7.5 mi) south-west of central Sarajevo, the airport sits at 1,708 ft (520 m) elevation on the Sarajevo Valley floor, ringed by Mount Igman, Trebević and the Dinaric Alps. Its single 8,666-ft (2,641-m) asphalt runway 11/29 is equipped for Category III low-visibility operations - essential in a basin prone to winter fog - and is long enough for narrowbody and light widebody traffic including the Boeing 787 occasionally operated by Turkish Airlines. SJJ is historically significant: the airport was besieged and closed to civil traffic between 1992 and 1995, during which it functioned as the Maybe Airlift hub for the largest sustained humanitarian airlift in UN history, with AN-26, Il-76 and C-130 aircraft keeping a city of 400,000 supplied. The 'Sarajevo Tunnel' (now a museum) ran directly beneath the runway. Civil traffic resumed fully in 1996 and the airport now serves 52 routes to 38 destinations on 31 airlines (2026), including FlyBosnia, Turkish Airlines, Austrian, Pegasus, Lufthansa, Wizz Air, easyJet, Ryanair, Air Serbia, Croatia Airlines and seasonal Gulf carriers. A 2015 terminal expansion more than doubled capacity to handle up to 2 million passengers per year, and post-pandemic diaspora traffic to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia and Turkey has consistently pushed volumes toward new records. SJJ is state-owned and functions as the airport of record for the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the diplomatic community headquartered in Sarajevo. The airport also handled the logistics flights for the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, an event that left the city with extensive aviation infrastructure unusual for its size. Sarajevo's valley basin imposes restrictive weather minima, and winter fog can force diversions to Mostar (OMO) or Tuzla (TZL); the airport's CAT IIIb approach has sharply reduced this disruption in recent years. Cargo operations for textile and furniture exports to Germany round out the annual traffic mix.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Sarajevo

Public transportation

The Centrotrans Airport Bus runs between the terminal and Baščaršija via the central Latin Bridge, roughly every 30-60 minutes with tickets purchased on board. Trolleybus lines 103 and 107 (Ilidža-city) stop on Kurta Schorka about 500 m (1,640 ft) from the terminal; combined with an inexpensive GRAS city ticket, this is the cheapest option.

Taxis & rideshare

Official Sarajevo Taxi operators (plates ending 'TA') queue outside Terminal B arrivals. Metered fares to the centre are typically 20-30 BAM (10-15 EUR) with a 30-minute journey. Confirm the driver is using the meter before leaving; unofficial drivers inside the terminal should be refused. Most taxis accept BAM cash only.

Rental cars

Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Alamo and local Hyundai Rent a Car operate counters inside arrivals. Winter tyres and snow chains are mandatory by law from 1 November to 15 April across Bosnia, and rental cars are typically equipped accordingly. An International Driving Permit is required in addition to the home licence.
