Dandong Langtou International Airport (DDG) serves the Chinese border city of Dandong in Liaoning Province, directly opposite the North Korean city of Sinuiju across the Yalu River. Opened in its current form in 2014 to replace the older military-shared field, the new airport at Langtou moved civil operations to a coastal site and upgraded Dandong from a regional airfield to an internationally designated gateway for cross-border and coastal traffic. The airport operates an asphalt runway sized for narrow-body jet operations, and a modern terminal serving predominantly domestic Chinese services to Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Shenzhen and other major cities through carriers such as China Southern, Shandong Airlines and Joy Air. Dandong's unique geography – the closest sizeable Chinese airport to North Korea, with the Friendship Bridge and the Broken Bridge both visible from the riverfront – has historically given DDG a rare role as a potential gateway for limited flights to Pyongyang (FNJ), though service has been sporadic and politically sensitive. On northeast Chinese airport rankings Dandong sits in the second-tier regional category, overshadowed by Shenyang Taoxian (SHE) and Dalian (DLC) but distinctive in its border-city positioning. It supports inbound Chinese tourism to the North Korea border sights, the Hushan Great Wall, and Bohai Sea coastal resorts, and its cargo role is tied to regional border trade in seafood, agricultural products and textiles. The airport's capacity and runway profile provide room for further growth if cross-border traffic to the DPRK expands under future policy frameworks.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Dandong (Zhenxing)

Public transportation

A dedicated airport bus route connects DDG with Dandong Railway Station and several stops in the city centre, timed to meet major flights. Tickets are inexpensive, payable in renminbi or via Chinese mobile-payment QR codes, with journey times of around 40–50 minutes covering the distance between the coastal airport and downtown Dandong along the Yalu River.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue at arrivals and charge standard Liaoning provincial rates plus a small airport surcharge, serving destinations across Dandong, the Binhai industrial zone and longer-distance trips to Dalian or Shenyang on negotiated fares. Ride-hailing via Didi Chuxing is widely available and often more convenient for visitors familiar with Chinese payment apps.

Rental cars

Car rental at Dandong is possible via Chinese operators such as eHi and CAR Inc., though self-drive is less popular among foreign visitors than a car-and-driver arrangement. A Chinese driving licence or temporary permit is mandatory – international permits are not recognised – and advance booking with an agent familiar with the city's cross-border sensitivities is recommended.
