Shenyang Taoxian International is the largest airport in northeast China and the primary aviation gateway for Liaoning Province, handling roughly 19M passengers annually across 205 weekly routes to 80 destinations on 39 airlines. SHE is the flagship base of China Southern Airlines' Northeast Company, the leading carrier in the region, and serves as the main connecting airport for passengers traveling between northeast China, Beijing, Shanghai, and the broader national network. Shenyang itself is the largest city in the former Manchurian heartland with a metropolitan population of roughly 9M. The airport operates a single 10,499 ft (3,200 m) runway with a second runway under construction, and a single integrated Terminal 3 that opened in 2013 spanning 248,000 m² (2.67M sqft). Annual capacity is designed for 38M passengers across two terminal phases, with Terminal 4 planned to open by 2028 as part of a long-term masterplan to position SHE as the primary international gateway for the three northeastern provinces (Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang) — a region with more than 100M residents and deep historical trade links to Russia, North Korea, and Japan. SHE sits at 198 ft (60 m) elevation in Hunnan District, 20 km (12 mi) south of downtown Shenyang. International reach is concentrated on Northeast Asia: Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Vladivostok, and Pyongyang operate as regular markets, reflecting Shenyang's role as China's principal commercial and transport hub for trade with the Korean Peninsula, Japan, and the Russian Far East. Domestic reach covers all of mainland China's major cities, with SHE serving as a northern connecting point between Beijing/Daxing and secondary destinations across Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, and Jilin provinces.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Hunnan, Shenyang

Public transportation

Shenyang Metro Line 2 has a dedicated Taoxian Airport Station directly connected to Terminal 3, providing a fast link to downtown Shenyang and interchanges with Lines 1, 9, and 10 reaching Shenyang North Railway Station in about 40 minutes. The Shenyang Modern Tram (Line 2) also serves the airport, connecting to the Hunnan New Area technology district. Airport shuttle buses operate multiple lines to major points across the city and long-distance coach routes to Anshan, Fushun, and Benxi.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue at designated stands outside the arrivals hall of Terminal 3 around the clock. A ride to downtown Shenyang typically takes 30–50 minutes and costs CNY 70–100 depending on traffic and the specific district. Ride-hailing via DiDi Chuxing is widely used and operates from a separate pickup zone within the airport's ground transport area.

Rental cars

Car rental counters for China Auto Rental (CAR Inc.) and eHi Car Services are available in the arrivals hall. Foreign visitors typically require a temporary Chinese driver's license, as the International Driving Permit is not recognized by mainland Chinese authorities. Chauffeur-driven rentals are the standard alternative for overseas travelers and can be arranged at the same counters or pre-booked through Chinese travel platforms.
