Yantai Penglai International Airport is the principal airport serving the coastal city of Yantai and the Shandong Peninsula of northeastern China. Located roughly 40 mi (65 km) northwest of central Yantai at Penglai, YNT opened in 2015 as a greenfield replacement for the aging Laishan Airport, which was closed and converted to military use. Despite its relatively modest origin-catchment, YNT has scaled into one of Shandong's two most important airports — alongside Qingdao Jiaodong — and handles 131 routes to 58 destinations with 25 airlines. The airport's significance is amplified by its position across the Bohai Sea from Dalian, its proximity to the Korea ferry network, and its role in serving Yantai's high-value industries including fruit, wine (Changyu is headquartered in Yantai), and automotive manufacturing. No carrier runs a full hub at YNT, but Shandong Airlines, Capital Airlines, and Juneyao Airlines maintain focus-city operations, alongside significant service by Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan Airlines, Xiamen Air, Spring Airlines, 9 Air, and Loong Air. International service is limited but meaningful — primarily to South Korea (Seoul Incheon, Busan) given the geographic proximity, with additional routes to Japan, Taipei, Bangkok, and Singapore on seasonal or regular frequencies. The domestic network is dense, connecting to almost every Chinese provincial capital and major secondary city. The airfield sits at 154 ft (47 m) elevation with a single 11,155 ft (3,400 m) concrete runway, 05/23, configured to accommodate wide-body operations and designed with substantial expansion headroom. The current terminal building was designed for initial annual capacity on the order of 10 million passengers, and a major second-phase expansion including a second runway, new terminal, and an integrated ground-transportation hub is in progression to lift capacity considerably. YNT shares its site with the Penglaishi high-speed rail station, making it one of the better rail-integrated secondary airports in China and providing direct rail access to Qingdao, Weihai, and the Jinan–Qingdao corridor.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Yantai

Public transportation

Penglaishi high-speed rail station is integrated with the airport and provides direct service on the Qingrong intercity railway to Qingdao, Weihai, Rongcheng, and connections westward via Jinan to the national HSR network. Journey times are roughly 60 min to Qingdao and 30 min to Weihai. Airport shuttle buses operate on more than a dozen routes to Yantai Railway Station, Yantai Bus Station, downtown Yantai, Penglai, Longkou, Zhaoyuan, Laiyang, and other Shandong destinations with fares typically CNY 20–60. Services run from early morning until the late-evening last arrivals.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis are available 24/7 at the official rank outside arrivals. Typical fares: CNY 150–200 to central Yantai (60–80 min), CNY 80–110 to Penglai district (30–40 min), CNY 250–350 to Longkou, CNY 400+ to Weihai. Didi Chuxing — the dominant Chinese ride-hailing app — operates at YNT with competitive pricing and is the most convenient option for non-Chinese speakers if the app has been pre-installed with an English-compatible payment link. Destination addresses should be prepared in Chinese characters for drivers.

Rental cars

Rental-car counters in arrivals are operated by the major Chinese self-drive operators — China Auto Rental (Shenzhou Zuche / CAR Inc.), eHi Car Services, and 1hai. Foreign drivers face a significant obstacle: China does not recognize the International Driving Permit, and a temporary or full Chinese driver's license is required to legally operate a rental car. Most international visitors default to chauffeured services or Didi rather than self-drive. Availability and rates are best booked online in advance; vehicles are typically returned at the same terminal lot.
