Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport (SSA), commonly known as Salvador-Bahia Airport, is the principal gateway to Brazil's Northeast and the country's seventh-busiest airport by passenger traffic. Located in the São Cristóvão district 28 km (17 mi) north-east of central Salvador, the complex sits on the Atlantic coast at an elevation of 64 ft (20 m). Its main runway 10/28 measures 9,859 ft (3,005 m), long enough for non-stop wide-body service to Lisbon, Frankfurt and Miami; a secondary crosswind strip 17/35 of 4,987 ft (1,520 m) handles regional turboprops. Operated by French concessionaire VINCI Airports since 2018, SSA serves 55 routes to 37 destinations on 12 airlines (2026). The airport is a focus city for Azul, LATAM and GOL, and handles the majority of Brazil's Northeast-to-Europe long-haul with TAP Air Portugal, Air Europa and Lufthansa operating year-round transatlantic service. Cargo operations and offshore helicopter flights to the Campos and Camamu oil basins add steady non-passenger revenue. A 700 million BRL terminal overhaul completed in 2021 brought 22 new jet bridges, expanded immigration and a rainforest-themed departures concourse. Bahia's cultural weight, Carnival season and 50 km (31 mi) of Atlantic beaches make SSA an unusually seasonal airport: monthly traffic can swing 40% between February and the rainy May-June shoulder. Salvador itself is the original colonial capital of Brazil (founded 1549) and a UNESCO World Heritage city, anchoring the airport's international brand as the entry point to Afro-Brazilian heritage tourism. The airport is named after Bahian congressman Luís Eduardo Magalhães (1955-1998), who championed regional infrastructure investment in the 1990s. Pre-concession traffic stalled near 7.5 million annual passengers; Vinci's masterplan targets a lift to 15 million by the late 2030s, supported by a parallel apron expansion and cargo-area rebuild.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Salvador

Public transportation

A free shuttle bus every 15 minutes links the terminal to Aeroporto metro station on Salvador Metro Line 2, from where trains reach Estação da Lapa and the historic Pelourinho in about 40 minutes. Municipal bus lines 1402 (Praça da Sé) and R1 (Estação Mussurunga) also stop outside arrivals; fares are paid with the Salcard or in cash to the fare collector.

Taxis & rideshare

Accredited cooperative taxis (Coometas and Cootaxi) operate 24/7 from the arrivals curb, with pre-paid vouchers sold inside the terminal at roughly 90-140 BRL to Barra and Pelourinho. Uber and 99 Pop are widely used and have marked pickup zones in the short-term car park. Journey to downtown takes 35-55 minutes depending on Avenida Paralela traffic.

Rental cars

Localiza, Movida, Unidas, Hertz, Avis and Budget counters line the arrivals hall, with vehicles collected from a shuttle-served lot 500 m (1,640 ft) north of the terminal. A rental is practical for reaching the Costa do Sauípe resorts, Praia do Forte and the Baía de Todos os Santos bay road. Brazilian residents need CNH; visitors use a home licence plus International Driving Permit.
