Hannover Airport, officially Hannover-Langenhagen, is the principal airport of Lower Saxony and the ninth-busiest in Germany. Its catchment spans the industrial and trade-fair economy of northern Germany: Hannover itself hosts the world's largest industrial trade fair (Hannover Messe), the CeBIT IT show's historical home, and major Volkswagen, Continental, and TUI corporate headquarters — TUI is Europe's largest tour operator and maintains significant operational exposure to HAJ through its charter and scheduled leisure fleet. Three runways — two operationally paired at 3,200 m (10,499 ft) and 2,340 m (7,677 ft) plus a general-aviation crosswind strip — support approximately 80 routes to 51 destinations across 32 airlines. Discover Airlines (Lufthansa Group), Condor, Corendon, SunExpress, Eurowings, and TUI fly dominate the route network, which is weighted toward Mediterranean, Canary Islands, and North African leisure destinations alongside intra-German and European business services. Hannover lost Lufthansa mainline hub connectivity after the airline restructured feeder operations to Frankfurt and Munich. The airport also hosts a secondary TUI fly maintenance base and is one of several German airports cleared for Antonov An-124 outsize-cargo charters. Terminals A, B, and C sit under a single continuous roof in a linear layout that enables short walking distances and rapid connections. Hannover was historically also the site of the Berlin Airlift's Allied cargo staging and has retained civil/military dual use; the German Air Force Search and Rescue operation maintains a detachment here. Passenger traffic reached approximately 5.5M in 2023, still about 15% below the 2019 peak of 6.3M, a recovery lag shared by most German regional airports.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Hannover

Public transportation

S-Bahn Line S5 runs directly from Terminal C to Hannover Hauptbahnhof in 18 minutes, every 30 minutes, with fares around 3.90 EUR on a GVH single ticket. From Hauptbahnhof, ICE services reach Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Munich. Bus line 470 connects to Langenhagen Zentrum for local transfers. The S-Bahn ticket is valid on all GVH regional transport for the validity period.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis wait at the ranks outside Arrivals at all three terminals 24/7. A ride to Hannover city center (11 km) takes 20–25 minutes and typically costs 25–35 EUR. Uber and Bolt operate but with more limited coverage than at larger German airports; the S-Bahn is faster during rush hour.

Rental cars

The Car Rental Centre is in the Arrivals area between Terminals A and B and houses Sixt, Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Enterprise, and Budget. EU/EEA driving licenses are accepted directly. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit in addition to the original national license; Germany enforces this strictly at roadside checks.
