Bremen Airport is one of the oldest continuously operating commercial airports in Germany — founded in 1913 — and the principal airport of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, a federal state of Germany and a historic member of the Hanseatic League. Serving 35 scheduled routes to 26 nonstop destinations operated by 19 airlines, BRE combines Lufthansa regional feeder operations with Ryanair, Wizz Air, and Turkish Airlines point-to-point service. The airport operates a primary 8,642 ft (2,634 m) lighted asphalt runway 09/27 and a shorter 2,297 ft (700 m) secondary 05/23 strip used principally for general aviation and Airbus acceptance flights. BRE sits only 3.5 km (2.2 mi) from Bremen city centre — making it one of the closest major German airports to its downtown — at 14 ft (4 m) elevation. The Airbus plant at Bremen, a primary European wing-system and high-lift-devices manufacturing site, is directly adjacent to the southern apron and manages frequent heavy-lift departures via Beluga ST and Beluga XL transport aircraft destined for Airbus final-assembly lines at Toulouse and Hamburg. Internationally significant through its role in the Airbus industrial supply chain and as Germany's closest airport to a downtown by tram transit — Tram Line 6 runs directly from the terminal to Bremen Hauptbahnhof in approximately 15 minutes, a rare urban integration for a German airport. The terminal area includes Bremen Terminal 3, a secondary LCC concourse added for Ryanair, and hosts regular charter operations to Mediterranean leisure destinations. Night-flight restrictions between 23:00 and 06:00 limit late operations and are enforced under Bremen state aviation law.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Bremen

Public transportation

Tram Line 6 runs from the terminal forecourt directly to Bremen Hauptbahnhof (central station) in 15 minutes, with onward connections to all regional and ICE rail services. Trams depart every 10 minutes between 05:00 and 23:00. Single tickets cost EUR 3.25 on the BSAG network. Night bus N6 covers the route overnight.

Taxis & rideshare

A taxi rank operates 24/7 directly outside the terminal. Roland Taxi and Taxi-Ruf Bremen are the principal providers. Metered fares to central Bremen run EUR 14–20 on a 10–15 minute trip, with wheelchair-accessible vehicles bookable on request. Night tariffs (22:00–06:00) and weekend surcharges apply.

Rental cars

Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Hertz, and Enterprise maintain counters in Terminal 3 opposite the check-in area. Vehicles are collected from the adjacent multi-storey car park. Bremen's autobahn connectivity via the A1 (Hamburg–Ruhr), A27 (Cuxhaven–Hannover), and B6 federal highway provides fast access across Lower Saxony and into the Weser estuary to Bremerhaven.
