Helsinki Airport is Finland's principal international gateway and the flagship hub of Finnair, the Finnish national carrier and one of Europe's oldest continuously operating airlines, founded in 1923. HEL handles roughly 17M passengers (2024) across 198 weekly routes to 128 destinations on 36 airlines, and its operational model is defined by a single strategic advantage: Helsinki's position at the northern edge of the European landmass places it on the shortest great-circle routes between Western Europe and Northeast Asia, a geographic reality that Finnair has built its widebody long-haul business around. Before the 2022 closure of Russian airspace to EU carriers, HEL was the fastest European-Asian transfer hub for destinations including Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Bangkok, with Finnair routinely flying routes up to 90 minutes shorter than continental competitors. Russian airspace closures have significantly extended Asian flight times and degraded the structural advantage, but HEL remains a Oneworld Asian gateway with continued widebody service to Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Bangkok, Singapore, Delhi, and Doha. Three parallel runways (two at 11,286 ft / 3,440 m and 10,039 ft / 3,060 m) plus a 9,518 ft (2,901 m) crosswind support the operation. HEL sits 17 km (11 mi) north of central Helsinki in the municipality of Vantaa at 179 ft (55 m) elevation. The airport underwent a decade-long €1B expansion completed in 2023 adding a new widebody pier, expanded non-Schengen concourse, and a 14,000 m² central plaza — the largest airport construction project in Finnish history, sized for 30M annual passengers. Finnair shares the hub with Nordic Regional Airlines, and Norwegian and Ryanair operate significant short-haul bases. HEL has won ACI and Skytrax awards for passenger experience and on-time performance consistently since 2019.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Helsinki (Vantaa)

Public transportation

The Ring Rail Line (Kehärata) places HEL directly on Helsinki's commuter rail network with a station beneath the terminal, reaching Helsinki Central Railway Station in approximately 30 minutes for €4.40 on trains I and P with departures every 10–20 minutes from 05:00 to 00:30. Local bus 600 runs to Central Station at lower cost. A bus station in front of the terminal serves long-distance services to cities across Finland including Tampere, Turku, and Lahti. HSL tickets must be purchased before boarding from machines or the mobile app.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxi ranks are located directly outside the arrivals hall. Fixed-price and metered fares are both offered — confirm the fare type with the driver before departure. A trip to central Helsinki typically runs €50–60 in 25–35 minutes. Taksi Helsinki and Lähitaksi are the main operators. Ride-hailing (Bolt, Yango) is widely available with designated pickup zones.

Rental cars

Service desks for Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt are in the corridor between the arrivals and departures halls. Vehicles are collected from and returned to the P3 parking building, a short covered walk from the terminal — no shuttle required. An International Driving Permit is required for non-EU, non-EEA licenses. Winter-tire rental is standard November through April.
