Stockholm-Arlanda is Sweden's dominant gateway and the largest airport in the Nordic region by passenger volume, handling 26.3M travelers (2024) across 160 destinations on 66 airlines. ARN sits 37 km north of central Stockholm on a 20,000-acre (8,100 ha) site in Sigtuna municipality — a footprint many times larger than Arlanda's traffic volume would suggest, reflecting Swedavia's long-term masterplan to accommodate a second city-pair hub and significant cargo expansion. SAS Scandinavian operates its largest hub at ARN as the flag carrier of a multi-national alliance (Sweden, Denmark, Norway), feeding Star Alliance long-haul connections to the U.S., Asia, and southern Europe. Norwegian and BRA (Braathens Regional) run substantial secondary bases, and Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet maintain low-cost operations alongside full-service carriers serving the Baltic, Nordic, and continental European markets. Four terminals are grouped into two connected buildings: Terminals 2 and 5 handle international Schengen/non-Schengen traffic, while Terminals 3 and 4 serve primarily domestic and Nordic routes. Three runways — 10,830 ft (3,301 m), 8,202 ft (2,500 m), and 8,201 ft (2,500 m) — operate under strict night-noise restrictions. The airport sits at 137 ft (42 m) elevation on the Uppsala plain and is one of Europe's leading examples of airport sustainability programming: Arlanda was the first airport in the world certified carbon-neutral, operates a geothermal aquifer thermal energy storage system for terminal climate control, and has committed to fossil-free ground operations. ARN's strategic position as the northernmost major hub in Europe gives it a distinctive role in polar-route connections between North America and North Asia, and SAS's transatlantic operation uses Stockholm as a third-gateway complement to Copenhagen and Oslo.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Stockholm

Public transportation

The Arlanda Express is Europe's fastest airport rail link per km, reaching Stockholm Central in 18 minutes nonstop for SEK 320, running every 15 minutes from 05:00 to 00:40. Pendeltåg commuter trains take 38 minutes to Stockholm City station for SEK 174 (includes the SEK 137 airport passage fee). Flygbussarna and Flixbus airport coaches run from Terminals 2, 4, and 5 to Cityterminalen in 45–55 minutes for SEK 119. SL regional buses serve Märsta and Uppsala.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis queue outside all terminals with clearly marked yellow-and-white price labels on the rear window displaying the fixed fare to central Stockholm — typically SEK 650–750 for a 40-minute trip. Confirming the fixed price before departure is strongly recommended, as Swedish taxi fares are deregulated and unlabeled vehicles may quote significantly higher rates. Major companies include Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir, and Sverigetaxi.

Rental cars

Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and local providers operate from a dedicated Car Rental Center reached by the free Bus Alfa shuttle from each terminal curb (runs every 10–15 minutes, 24/7). The consolidated facility includes premium and electric fleets, reflecting Sweden's high EV uptake; pre-booking is advised given ARN's role as a one-way departure point for Stockholm–Gothenburg–Malmö road trips.
