Boryspil International Airport (KBP) is Ukraine's main airport, located about 18 mi (29 km) east of central Kyiv near the town of Boryspil. Before 2022 it was by far the country's busiest airport, handling more than 15 million passengers in 2019 and acting as the hub of Ukraine International Airlines and the principal Eastern European focus city for SkyTeam and Star Alliance carriers. The airport operates two parallel asphalt runways – the longer at 13,123 ft (4,000 m) – and a two-terminal complex centred on the modern Terminal D opened in 2012, built for the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament and designed to handle long-haul widebody traffic. Pre-war scheduled service extended across all major European hubs together with long-haul links to Beijing (PEK), Bangkok (BKK), Dubai (DXB), Doha (DOH), Tel Aviv (TLV) and New York (JFK). Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 closed Ukrainian civil airspace, and KBP has remained closed to scheduled commercial flights since. On European airport rankings Boryspil remained, until 2022, a firmly large-tier field – top twenty in Eastern Europe by passenger volume and top three by long-haul reach east of Warsaw. Its strategic value is reinforced by its designation as Ukraine's diplomatic gateway, hosting head-of-state movements, humanitarian and evacuation operations, and, in the immediate post-war planning, anchor airport for reconstruction air-bridge scenarios. Infrastructure at KBP remains intact and ready for phased reopening once airspace is restored.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Boryspil

Public transportation

Before 2022, KBP was connected to central Kyiv by the Kyiv Boryspil Express rail shuttle operated by Ukrzaliznytsia, running from Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi to a dedicated airport station in around 35 minutes, and by Sky Bus coaches to the main railway station. Airport-linked rail and bus service availability is subject to the current security situation and should be checked before travel.

Taxis & rideshare

A licensed airport taxi service historically operates from arrivals with metered and fixed-price fares into Kyiv, payable in hryvnia; ride-hailing apps such as Uklon and Bolt were widely used pre-war. Current availability depends on flight operations resuming, with martial-law curfews and security checks shaping the practical timetable.

Rental cars

International firms including Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt, alongside Ukrainian operators, maintained counters at KBP before the war, offering sedans and SUVs for travel within Kyiv oblast and onward to western Ukraine. Self-drive activity remains very limited during the current conflict, with most movements handled through employer or organisational transport.
