Rzeszów-Jasionka, 10 km north of the southeastern Polish city of Rzeszów, transformed from a regional airport of roughly 800,000 annual passengers (2019) into one of Europe's most strategically critical logistics nodes after February 2022, when the Russian invasion of Ukraine made it the primary Western air bridge for weapons, humanitarian aid, and diplomatic traffic bound for Kyiv. The 3,200 m (10,498 ft) concrete main runway — long enough for any aircraft in commercial service — sits 88 km from the Ukrainian border and is supplemented by a 2,085 m grass emergency strip and two shorter auxiliaries. That runway length, plus the airport's wartime logistics role, places RZE firmly in the 534 largest. Commercial traffic is handled by about 10 airlines operating 22 routes to 20 destinations (2026). Ryanair dominates the low-cost schedule with service to London (Stansted and Luton), Dublin, Manchester, Bristol, East Midlands, Warsaw-Modlin, Oslo, Bergen, and multiple Italian leisure destinations; LOT Polish Airlines connects Warsaw-Chopin for onward long-haul; Wizz Air, Lufthansa, and seasonal operators round out the schedule. Annual passenger throughput rebounded past 1M post-pandemic even as the airport's military-logistics workload multiplied. Since 2022, RZE has hosted a permanent rotational U.S. Army Patriot battery, semi-permanent C-17 and C-5 transport movements, and regular visits by NATO air-mobility aircraft — a tempo of Western military traffic unprecedented for any mid-sized European regional airport. A new terminal expansion is underway to accommodate both the civil growth and the heavier apron requirements. RZE's role as a civil–military gateway of high strategic significance is unusual among airports its size and is the operational reason it commands attention well beyond its commercial passenger numbers.
