Lviv International Airport

Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport (LWO) is the main airport of western Ukraine, located about 4 mi (6 km) southwest of Lviv's historic city centre at 1,071 ft (326 m) elevation. Named in 2001 for the medieval king Danylo Halytskyi, founder of Lviv, it was the closest major Ukrainian airport to the EU border and a cultural-heritage gateway before the 2022 closure of Ukrainian civil airspace. A Euro 2012 reconstruction delivered a new glass-and-stone terminal designed to echo Lviv's Austro-Hungarian architecture, lifting capacity to around 2 million passengers a year and adding a refurbished 10,663 ft (3,250 m) runway. In 2019, the airport recorded a peak of roughly 2.2 million passengers on services operated by Ukraine International, LOT Polish Airlines, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines and other major European carriers, with flights across Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK; short-haul links to Warsaw and Wrocław through the Shehyni border corridor positioned LWO as a practical alternative to Kyiv for western Ukraine. Civil operations at LWO have been suspended since February 2022, with the terminal used for humanitarian and military logistics close to the EU border. Physical infrastructure remains intact, and on post-war planning documents Lviv ranks alongside Boryspil (KBP) and Odesa (ODS) as one of the airports expected to reopen earliest, given its distance from the front lines. On European rankings it sits solidly in the large-airport category by runway length, terminal capacity and pre-war route network.
