Luxembourg-Findel is the only international airport of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and one of the most outsized passenger-to-cargo operations in Europe, ranked by BigAirports as the continent's top cargo airport per capita and home base of Cargolux — among the world's five largest freighter-only airlines. Located 6 km east of Luxembourg City at 1,234 ft (376 m) elevation, Findel handles roughly 5M passengers and over 1M tonnes of cargo annually from a single consolidated terminal (Terminal A) with a smaller Terminal B low-cost pier. A single 13,123 ft (4,000 m) asphalt runway (06/24) — unusually long for a passenger operation of this size — was dimensioned around Cargolux's Boeing 747-8F fleet and supports fully loaded freighter departures to Asia and the Americas. The passenger terminal was rebuilt in 2008 with a glass-and-steel pier configuration on the Schengen model and handles 15 self-service check-in counters and a unified security filter feeding both Schengen and non-Schengen gates. Luxair, the national carrier, operates a point-to-point European network anchored at LUX with additional seasonal Mediterranean and North African leisure service through its LuxairTours package arm. Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, Swiss, TAP, Turkish Airlines and Emirates (via a Hamburg tag) all operate scheduled service, producing 157 routes and 125 destinations across 30 airlines — an unusually broad map for a single-runway airport. LUX's combination of concentrated EU-institution traffic (European Court of Justice, European Investment Bank, European Court of Auditors), high-yield business-travel demand and global cargo reach make it structurally one of the most economically productive airports per movement in Europe.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Luxembourg

Public transportation

All public transport in Luxembourg is free — the first country in the world to provide nationwide free public transit (2020). Bus lines 16, 29 and 6 serve the stop directly in front of the terminal: Line 16 reaches Kirchberg and Gare Centrale, Line 29 serves the city center, and onward tram connections at Luxexpo extend throughout the capital. No tickets are required for any journey within the Grand Duchy.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue 24/7 at the rank outside Arrivals with metered fares set by national tariff — typical runs to Kirchberg are EUR 25–35 and to Gare Centrale EUR 35–45, with a nighttime and Sunday surcharge. Airport Taxis and Webtaxi are the main operators. Uber is not available in Luxembourg; Heetch and local app-based services are used instead.

Rental cars

Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt operate from desks on Level -1 of the terminal with vehicles collected in the covered multi-storey car park A a short walk away. An EU or International Driving Permit is valid; minimum driver age is typically 21 with a 1–3 year license requirement. Cross-border travel to Germany, France and Belgium is unrestricted and common.
