Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is the second-busiest airport in Portugal after Lisbon (LIS) and one of the fastest-growing major airports in Western Europe, serving 61 airlines on 224 routes to 135 nonstop destinations. Located 11 km (7 mi) northwest of central Porto at an elevation of 228 ft (69 m), OPO is named for former Portuguese prime minister Francisco Sá Carneiro, who died in a 1980 aircraft crash shortly after departing Lisbon for an electoral rally in Porto. OPO serves as a major operating base for TAP Air Portugal, the country's flag carrier, and as the largest Ryanair base on the Iberian Peninsula outside Madrid — the low-cost carrier operates dozens of based aircraft and routes from OPO, making the airport one of the most Ryanair-weighted major hubs in the Star Alliance ecosystem. easyJet, Transavia, Wizz Air, and Vueling round out a heavy low-cost carrier density, while TAP's long-haul network provides direct service to Brazil (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Salvador, Fortaleza, Belém) and North America (New York JFK, Newark, Boston, Toronto) — serving Porto's deep diaspora and business links to the Lusophone Atlantic. OPO operates a single 11,417 ft (3,480 m) asphalt runway (17/35) — long enough for any commercial aircraft type in service — and a single integrated passenger terminal that has been expanded repeatedly to accommodate traffic growth from roughly 3 million passengers in the early 2000s to over 15 million by the mid-2020s. The airport is managed by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal (a subsidiary of French concessionaire Vinci Airports) and has been repeatedly recognized by Airports Council International (ACI) as among the best European airports in the 10–25 million passenger category. A new satellite terminal and expanded apron have been announced to handle further growth.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Porto

Public transportation

Porto Metro Line E (Violet) connects the airport directly to the city center and runs every 20–30 minutes. Trains reach Trindade station — the metro's central interchange — in about 30 minutes for EUR 2.60 using the rechargeable Andante card (card purchase EUR 0.60). The metro continues to Campanhã and São Bento railway stations for onward CP Comboios de Portugal regional and intercity trains. STCP city bus routes 601, 602, and 604 also serve the airport at lower cost, and long-distance Get Bus shuttle services connect to Braga and Guimarães.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue 24/7 directly outside the arrivals terminal. Fares to Porto city center (Baixa, Ribeira) run EUR 25–35 for a 20–30 minute trip, to Vila Nova de Gaia port-wine cellars EUR 30–40, and to Braga EUR 60–75. A EUR 1.75 airport surcharge applies, plus small luggage fees. Uber and Bolt ride-sharing services are widely available from designated pickup zones, often at lower rates than metered taxis.

Rental cars

Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise, Goldcar, and Portuguese local operators including Guerin and Drive on Holidays maintain desks in the arrivals hall with vehicles collected from the adjacent rental lot. Advance booking is strongly advised in summer, when demand outstrips supply. Vehicles access the A41 and A28 motorways directly, connecting to the A3 north toward Braga and the A1 south toward Lisbon (3-hour drive). Electronic toll transponders are available at most rental counters.
