Humberto Delgado Airport is Portugal's busiest airfield and Western Europe's principal southwestern gateway, handling 35.1M passengers (2023) from a single 12,162 ft (3,707 m) asphalt runway — a throughput-per-runway figure that ranks among the highest of any major European hub. Its location just 7 km from central Lisbon is unusual for an airport of this size; the 02/20 strip threads between the city and the Odivelas suburbs, forcing operators to manage noise corridors that have shaped departure procedures for decades. TAP Air Portugal bases its entire long-haul operation at LIS, exploiting the Iberian Peninsula's westward position to run the shortest scheduled connections between Europe and Brazil. The carrier serves 10 Brazilian cities nonstop — more than any non-Brazilian airline — alongside West African hubs (Luanda, Maputo, São Tomé) that reflect Portugal's historical trade geography. Across 81 airlines and 321 scheduled routes, LIS connects 155 destinations spanning five continents, with Ryanair, easyJet, and Lufthansa Group carriers adding dense European coverage. Two terminals share a single airside complex: Terminal 1 handles Schengen, non-Schengen, and all intercontinental traffic, while Terminal 2 is dedicated to low-cost carriers and linked by shuttle bus. A capacity ceiling is the defining operational story — the airport has run at or near saturation since 2018, prompting Portugal's 2024 decision to build a replacement hub at Alcochete, 40 km east, for opening in the 2030s. Until then, LIS compensates with off-hour banks, tight turnaround times, and one of Europe's most intensive single-runway schedules. Elevation is 374 ft (114 m), and the airport sits on 1,532 acres (620 ha).
