Kraków John Paul II International is Poland's second-busiest airport after Warsaw Chopin, handling roughly 11M passengers (2024) — a record volume for a regional, non-capital airport in Central Europe and one of the fastest-growing secondary hubs in the European Union. KRK sits 11 km (7 mi) west of Kraków city centre at Balice, on a site shared with the Polish Air Force's 8th Transport Aviation Base, and serves a catchment of roughly 8 million people across Lesser Poland, Silesia, and northern Slovakia. The airport has no home-based network carrier; instead it functions as Poland's largest low-cost base, with Ryanair operating its biggest Polish base here (routinely running 20+ aircraft-equivalent schedules), Wizz Air maintaining a large secondary operation, and scheduled full-service service from Lufthansa (Munich/Frankfurt), British Airways (Heathrow), Air France (Paris-CDG), KLM (Amsterdam), LOT Polish Airlines (Warsaw), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), and SWISS (Zurich). The route map reaches 133 destinations across 44 airlines, heavily skewed toward UK-Poland, German-Poland, Nordic-Poland, and emerging Middle East links. A single 8,366 ft (2,550 m) concrete runway 07/25 handles all traffic; the current passenger terminal, fully rebuilt and extended in 2015, operates at roughly 8M design capacity, and a new second terminal — under construction through 2027 — will push capacity toward 15M annually. The airport sits at 791 ft (241 m) elevation and is notable for its direct connection to the Polish national rail network via an elevated station adjacent to the terminal, a relatively rare configuration for a regional European airport of its size.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Balice

Public transportation

Koleje Małopolskie operates a direct rail link from the elevated station at the terminal to Kraków Główny main railway station in 17 minutes, departing every 30 minutes from 04:00 to midnight, tickets PLN 22. ZTP city buses 209, 252, and 300 (plus night bus 902) also connect the airport to Kraków in 40–50 minutes at standard zone fare.

Taxis & rideshare

The contracted airport taxi concession (iCar / Kraków Airport Taxi) queues 24/7 directly outside arrivals with regulated tariffs — roughly PLN 89–119 to central Kraków (Old Town, Kazimierz) in 20–30 minutes. Bolt, Uber, and FreeNow operate via app with designated pickup zones in the forecourt.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise, Europcar, Budget, and Polish operator Panek have desks on Level +1 mezzanine of the terminal. The rental car park is a signposted 3-minute walk from arrivals. Booking in advance is recommended for summer weekends and winter ski-season traffic to the Tatras.
