Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport is the third-busiest airport in Poland by passenger volume after Warsaw-Chopin (WAW) and Kraków-Balice (KRK), serving the Silesian Voivodeship's roughly 4.5M residents — the most populous region of Poland and one of the largest metropolitan agglomerations in the European Union. Located 21 mi (34 km) north of downtown Katowice at 995 ft (303 m) elevation in the town of Pyrzowice, KTW handles 90 routes across 64 destinations through 14 airlines. The airport is named for Wojciech Korfanty, the Silesian independence leader who played a central role in the 1920s plebiscites and uprisings that brought the region into the Polish state. Wizz Air operates one of its largest Polish bases at KTW with extensive service across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, and Ryanair runs significant base operations supporting its European network. Polish charter and leisure carrier Enter Air is headquartered at Katowice with a large fleet of 737s serving charter destinations around the Mediterranean, Canaries, North Africa, and the Caribbean; LOT Polish Airlines operates limited scheduled service. The network concentrates on Western European labor-migration and ethnic visiting-friends-and-relatives markets (London airports, Dublin, Cork, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Brussels, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Düsseldorf, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Milan, Rome) and Mediterranean leisure destinations via scheduled and charter operators (Antalya, Bodrum, Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Palma, Malaga, Zakynthos, Heraklion, Rhodes). The airfield operates a single concrete runway — 08/26 at 10,499 ft (3,200 m) — capable of full widebody operations and notably used by the occasional charter and ACMI widebody flights supporting Enter Air's intercontinental leisure operations. A major passenger terminal expansion program has substantially increased capacity in successive phases since the mid-2000s, with Terminal C — the international passenger facility — serving most scheduled flights. KTW hosts significant cargo activity via Poczta Polska and international freight operators, and the airport's strategic location along major European road and rail corridors makes it an important logistics node for the Silesian industrial economy.

Ground transport options from Katowice

Public transportation

The KZK GOP (now ZTM) metropolitan bus network provides direct airport access. The express AP line runs 24/7 between KTW and Katowice city center (Katowice Dworzec PKP main railway station) via other major Silesian cities including Sosnowiec, Będzin, and Dąbrowa Górnicza, with journey time of roughly 45–70 min depending on route and fare around PLN 13–15. Other lines including M11 and M116 connect to smaller towns in the agglomeration. Private shuttle operators Matuszek and Flixbus run direct coach service to Kraków, Częstochowa, Cieszyn, and other regional destinations. Tickets can be purchased at machines, contactless on the bus, or via the Mobilet and jakdojade mobile apps.

Taxis & rideshare

The official Airport Taxi Service concession is available 24/7 directly outside the terminals with bookings at the information desk in the arrivals hall, by phone, or online. Typical fares run PLN 100–140 (EUR 23–32) to central Katowice (30–40 min), PLN 140–180 to Sosnowiec or Gliwice, PLN 250–350 to Kraków (90 min), and PLN 300–400 to Ostrawa/Ostrava in the Czech Republic. Uber and Bolt both operate at KTW with designated pickup areas and are typically 15–25% cheaper than rank taxis. Cash and card payment are accepted.

Rental cars

Numerous international and Polish car rental companies maintain desks in the arrivals hall of Terminal C. Major providers include Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and Polish operators Panek, CityCar, and Rentis. Pre-booking online is strongly recommended for better rates. Cars are picked up from nearby parking lots a short walk from the terminal. A valid EU or internationally recognized driver license and credit card are required. The A1 and A4 motorways provide direct onward access to Kraków eastbound (90 min), Wrocław westbound, Warsaw northeast, and the Czech and Slovak borders.
