Mitiga International Airport (MJI) is Libya's busiest airport and the de facto primary gateway to Tripoli, located 8 km (5 mi) east of the city centre at 36 ft (11 m) elevation on the Mediterranean coast. Originally built in the 1920s as an Italian colonial airfield and expanded into the U.S. Air Force's Wheelus Air Base - at its peak in the 1960s one of the largest American overseas bases - the facility was nationalised by Libya in 1970 and gradually converted to civilian use. Its single 11,155-ft (3,400-m) asphalt runway 10/28 supports widebody operations, a legacy of its Cold War strategic role. Mitiga became Tripoli's main civil airport after the closure of Tripoli International (TIP) during the 2014 conflict, and now handles 52 routes to 22 destinations on 13 airlines (2026). Home carriers Afriqiyah Airways, Libyan Airlines, Buraq Air and Medsky serve Istanbul, Tunis, Cairo, Alexandria, Khartoum, Amman, Benghazi and Sabha, plus seasonal links to Europe via Turkish Airlines and Tunisair. The airport has repeatedly suspended and resumed operations because of security incidents and airspace closures, a volatility that has shaped Libyan aviation patterns for more than a decade. Despite these constraints, MJI retains strategic importance: it is one of the few airports in North Africa with a runway long enough for fully loaded transatlantic widebodies and with significant fuel and maintenance infrastructure. Reconstruction of the original Tripoli International Airport and a planned new Mitiga terminal building are intended to separate civil and military traffic and expand passenger capacity above the present estimated 1.5 million per year. The airport is operated by the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority with parallel military command under the Libyan Air Force; many Western carriers and insurers continue to list Libyan airspace as elevated-risk, limiting route options. Turkish Airlines remains the most prominent foreign scheduled operator, providing a vital link for Libyan business travellers, students and medical patients transiting through Istanbul to onward destinations in Europe and beyond.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tripoli

Public transportation

Data Coming Soon. There are no scheduled public buses, shuttles or rail services linking the terminal to central Tripoli; the local transit network does not serve the airport in any reliable, published form.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis wait outside the terminal exit 24/7 but are unmetered - agree a fare before departure. A ride to central Tripoli (roughly 8 km / 5 mi) typically takes 20-30 minutes and costs 30-70 LYD depending on traffic and negotiation. Many travellers prefer a pre-arranged hotel transfer or a driver organised by a host company for safety and reliability.

Rental cars

Major international car-rental brands do not maintain a consistent presence at MJI. Vehicles can be arranged through Tripoli-based local firms, usually on a chauffeur-driven basis; self-drive is uncommon and not generally recommended for visitors unfamiliar with local driving conditions. Advance booking with verified local providers is essential.
