Marseille Provence Airport is France's fourth-busiest airport after Paris CDG, Paris Orly, and Nice, handling roughly 11M passengers (2024) across 202 weekly routes to 134 destinations on 51 airlines — one of the broadest carrier rosters of any French regional airport. MRS sits 27 km (17 mi) northwest of Marseille at Marignane, on the shore of the Étang de Berre, serving as the principal aviation gateway for France's second-largest city (metropolitan population 1.6M) and the broader Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region including Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Toulon, and the Camargue. The airport functions as a secondary base for Air France, a significant base for Ryanair and Volotea, and the operational headquarters of the business aviation unit supporting the south of France's extensive executive-jet market. MRS's distinctive operational feature is the MP2 terminal, a dedicated low-cost facility opened in 2006 that pioneered the budget-terminal model in France and became a template for similar facilities at other European airports. The main Terminal 1 handles full-service and international traffic, while MP2 handles low-cost carriers on a simplified apron layout. Two parallel runways at 11,483 ft (3,500 m) and 7,776 ft (2,370 m) provide substantial spare capacity. International reach covers most of Europe and North Africa — Algiers, Oran, Tunis, Casablanca, and Rabat operate as daily markets reflecting Marseille's historic and demographic ties to the Maghreb. Mediterranean seasonal service extends to Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Beirut, and Cairo. Transatlantic coverage is limited to seasonal Air France and Air Transat service to Montreal. MRS sits at 74 ft (23 m) elevation near sea level, and serves as the principal southern French hub for freight operators including ASL Airlines and La Poste's dedicated overnight cargo network.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Marignane, Bouches-du-Rhône

Public transportation

The L91 Airport Shuttle bus is the most frequent public option, running every 10–15 minutes to Marseille's Gare Saint-Charles main train station in 25–30 minutes for €10. Additional bus lines serve Aix-en-Provence TGV station, the city of Aix, and nearby coastal towns. A free 5-minute shuttle bus connects the airport to Vitrolles–Aéroport Marseille Provence train station on the regional rail network, offering TER services to Marseille, Avignon, Montpellier, and the broader Provence region.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed metered taxis queue at the rank outside Terminal 1 arrivals around the clock. Fares to central Marseille typically run €55–65 in 25–35 minutes, with supplements for luggage and holidays. Fixed-rate quotes are available for common destinations. Uber and Bolt operate from designated pickup zones for trips to destinations throughout Provence.

Rental cars

A dedicated rental car center faces Terminal 1 with counters for Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise, and several French operators including ADA and Ucar. Pickup is on-site within a short walk. Advance booking is strongly advised during the July–August peak season when Provence sees heavy leisure demand. An International Driving Permit is required alongside non-EU licenses.
