Odense Hans Christian Andersen Airport (ODE), also known as Beldringe Airport, is the main airport of Funen in central Denmark, sited about 9 mi (15 km) north of Odense city centre. Opened in the 1940s as a wartime Luftwaffe airfield and later used by the Royal Danish Air Force, it was transferred to civilian control in the 1970s and renamed for the city's most famous son, the fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen. The airport operates a 6,693 ft (2,040 m) asphalt runway capable of handling narrow-body jet traffic. Scheduled passenger service has been intermittent: various carriers have attempted links to Copenhagen (CPH), Stockholm (ARN) and southern European leisure destinations over the decades, with operations often shifting between charter programmes and short-lived scheduled experiments. The core business today is general aviation, flight training, business jet operations, and cargo and ad-hoc charter traffic, alongside a growing drone and unmanned-aerial-systems test-bed role for Danish and European research projects. On Scandinavian airport rankings ODE is a clear second-tier field overshadowed by Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH) and Billund (BLL), but it holds strategic value as Funen's primary airfield and as a backup for passenger operations during disruption at the main hubs. The airport also functions as a regional business-aviation base for Odense's robotics, maritime and energy industries, and has positioned itself as a European testing venue for advanced air mobility under Denmark's UAS Test Center designation.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Odense

Public transportation

Public buses operated by FynBus link the airport at Beldringe with Odense central station and nearby towns, with journey times of around 30 minutes into the city. Tickets are purchased via the Rejsekort smart-card system or the Rejseplanen app in Danish kroner, and schedules are coordinated loosely with flight activity rather than every movement.

Taxis & rideshare

A small taxi rank operates at the terminal, with Odense-based companies providing metered service into the city centre and out to Nyborg, Svendborg or the Funen bridges to Jutland and Zealand. Fares are in Danish kroner and cards are almost universally accepted; night-time or weekend surcharges may apply in line with national taxi regulations.

Rental cars

Major Danish and international rental firms including Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt serve Odense Airport on a pre-booking basis, with some counters staffed only to meet scheduled arrivals. A Danish, EU, EEA or international driving permit is accepted; Funen's flat terrain and well-signed motorway network make self-drive an efficient option for onward travel across the island and into Jutland.
