Billund Airport is the second-busiest airport in Denmark after Copenhagen and the largest airport serving the Jutland peninsula, handling roughly 3.8 million passengers annually. Its existence is tied directly to one of the most distinctive origin stories of any commercial airport: BLL was built in 1964 by the LEGO Group as a private airfield next to the company's headquarters in Billund, primarily to facilitate executive and freight access, before being opened to commercial traffic and gradually expanded into a full public airport. LEGO's global headquarters, the original Legoland theme park, and the LEGO House visitor center all sit within 2 km (1.2 mi) of the terminal, giving BLL the tightest theme-park-to-airport adjacency of any airport in Europe. BLL serves a catchment that includes Aarhus, Denmark's second-largest city, along with Esbjerg, Kolding, and Vejle. Ryanair is a large operator, with KLM, Lufthansa, SAS, British Airways, Wizz Air, Norwegian, Flybe (historically), and seasonal charter carriers TUI, Sunclass, and Jet2 serving the airport. BLL has no hub-and-spoke carrier but is one of the densest point-to-point European regional networks in Scandinavia, with nonstop service to London (all five main airports), Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Oslo, and seasonal Mediterranean leisure points. Limited long-haul charters and SAS seasonal New York service have operated. A single runway, 09/27, measures 10,171 ft (3,100 m) and can accommodate 747 and A380 charter and diversion operations. A 2021–2023 terminal expansion added significant jet bridge and security capacity. BLL sits 4 km (2.5 mi) east of Billund town, with Aarhus 90 km (56 mi) northeast and Copenhagen 260 km (162 mi) east (requiring a Great Belt crossing via bridge or ferry). The airport is jointly owned by regional Danish municipalities.
