Ontario International is the secondary commercial airport for the greater Los Angeles region and the primary airport for the Inland Empire — the San Bernardino and Riverside counties metropolitan area that is home to roughly 4.6M residents, one of the fastest-growing population centers in the United States. It sits 60 km east of downtown Los Angeles and functions as a natural alternative to LAX for eastern LA basin travelers, who face severe congestion reaching the coastal hub. Two parallel runways (the longer at 12,197 ft / 3,718 m) and two terminals (T2 and T4) support approximately 74 routes to 49 destinations via 22 airlines. Southwest Airlines is the dominant carrier with the largest share of movements; American, Delta, United, Alaska, Frontier, Spirit, JetBlue, and Hawaiian all operate scheduled services, and Volaris and China Airlines anchor international service to Mexico and Taipei respectively. ONT's service to Taipei (Taoyuan) makes it one of very few US secondary airports with a long-haul transpacific scheduled route, reflecting the region's significant Asian-American population and the Inland Empire's role as a logistics center. The airport is one of North America's most important air-cargo facilities. UPS operates its West Region Air Hub at ONT — the company's second-largest US sort facility after Louisville — with daily widebody arrivals from Asia and the company's 747-8F and MD-11F fleet. FedEx also maintains significant operations. Governance returned to local control in 2016 under the Ontario International Airport Authority after decades of LAWA (Los Angeles World Airports) operation, which had suppressed traffic; passenger volumes have since roughly doubled, reaching approximately 6.6M in 2023.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ontario

Public transportation

Omnitrans Route 61 links the airport to Pomona, Montclair, and the Rancho Cucamonga Metrolink station, from which Metrolink San Bernardino Line trains continue into Downtown Los Angeles Union Station. Bus stops are at the east ends of each terminal's inner curb. A dedicated ONT-to-Metrolink people mover has been proposed but is not yet operational.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis operate on the outer curb in front of each terminal with metered fares. Uber and Lyft have designated pickup zones at the east end of each terminal's inner curb. A ride to downtown Los Angeles runs $65–$110 and takes 50–80 minutes depending on I-10 conditions; Riverside (ONT is much closer) costs $45–$65.

Rental cars

All major agencies operate from the Consolidated Rental Car Center (ConRAC), reached by free 24/7 shuttle from the terminal curbside. Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Alamo, Dollar, Thrifty, Fox, and Sixt are represented. California driving regulations apply; international visitors may drive on a valid home-country license for up to 12 months but an IDP is recommended for translation purposes.
