Tijuana International Airport, officially Aeropuerto Internacional de Tijuana General Abelardo L. Rodríguez, is the sixth-busiest airport in Mexico, handling roughly 10 million passengers annually. Its distinguishing feature is also its most unusual: TIJ is the only airport in the world with a pedestrian cross-border bridge directly connecting the airside to another country. The Cross Border Xpress (CBX), opened in 2015, is a ticketed enclosed pedestrian bridge that spans the US–Mexico border, delivering US-bound passengers directly from the TIJ terminal into a facility in San Diego County, where they exit as US arrivals. CBX carries more than 3 million passengers annually and fundamentally reshapes TIJ's catchment to include the entire San Diego metropolitan area. TIJ is a hub for Volaris and Aeroméxico Connect, and is served by Viva Aerobus, Aeroméxico, Magnicharters, and (via CBX) passengers ultimately connecting to United, Delta, and Southwest flights from San Diego. Domestic Mexican service is extensive, with Volaris flying from TIJ to more than 30 Mexican destinations including Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, and Mérida. International service includes a notable Volaris nonstop to Tokyo-Narita (Japan) — the only commercial flight between Mexico and Japan — along with services to Shanghai, Guatemala City, San Salvador, and Cuban destinations. A single runway, 09/27, measures 9,700 ft (2,957 m) and sits at an elevation of 495 ft (151 m) adjacent to the US border fence. The runway's eastern threshold is approximately 800 ft (244 m) from US territory. The airport is named after Abelardo L. Rodríguez, a former President of Mexico. TIJ's combination of low Mexican cost base, proximity to the US, and the CBX bridge has created a unique cross-border low-cost hub model that several other border airports have attempted to emulate.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tijuana

Public transportation

Calafia Bus and other intercity Mexican coaches serve TIJ with routes to central Tijuana, Rosarito, and onward to Ensenada. Central Tijuana's Línea 1 bus route 1A runs from the airport via Vía Rápida Oriente to downtown Tijuana for MXN 17, a 25-minute trip. Passengers using CBX walk directly from the TIJ terminal through US customs to the CBX parking and bus facility on the San Diego side.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis (Taxi Libre Amarillo) queue outside Arrivals with fixed fares: MXN 250 to central Tijuana (15 min), MXN 400 to Rosarito (30 min), MXN 800 to Ensenada (90 min), and MXN 180 to the US border crossing at San Ysidro (pedestrian). Uber and DiDi are permitted at TIJ and are typically cheaper for longer trips. No taxi is permitted to cross the US border; passengers transfer to a US-side vehicle or use CBX.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar, Enterprise, Sixt, Alamo, and several Mexican operators (Mex Rent a Car, Sol Rent a Car) operate counters in the arrivals hall. Mexican auto insurance is required for vehicles driven beyond the border zone. US rental cars generally may not be taken south of the border zone; TIJ rentals may not cross into the US. From the airport, the Vía Rápida Oriente connects to central Tijuana in 7 km (4 mi) and the Scenic Highway (Mex 1D) runs south to Rosarito and Ensenada.
