Paro International is Bhutan's sole international airport and among the world's most operationally constrained commercial airfields, widely cited as one of only a handful of airports in the world where pilots require specific certification to land. The 2,265 m (7,431 ft) single runway sits at 2,245 m (7,364 ft) elevation in a tight Himalayan valley, surrounded by peaks reaching 5,500 m, with approaches that require steep banking turns, visual flight rules only, and daylight-hours operation. Those physical constraints — not passenger volume — are what secure PBH's place in any global airport ranking. Traffic is tightly bounded by geography and the country's controlled-tourism policy. Only 2 airlines, both Bhutan-based, are certified to operate into Paro: Druk Air (the flag carrier, since 1983) and Bhutan Airlines (since 2011). Together they run about 20 routes to 15 destinations (2026) — primarily Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bagdogra, Guwahati, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Singapore, and Dhaka, using Airbus A319 aircraft specifically modified for the airport's hot-and-high performance requirements. Annual throughput runs around 300,000 passengers, heavily seasonal around the October–November and March–April peaks. The terminal, built in traditional Bhutanese dzong style with carved and painted timber façades, is itself a defining architectural statement. Only about two dozen pilots worldwide are certified to land at Paro; the approach descends between mountain ridges, passes within kilometres of Taktsang (the Tiger's Nest monastery), and aligns with the runway only in the final seconds. The airport functions as the sole commercial aviation link for a nation of 780,000 and a Gross National Happiness-policy tourism sector that is metered partly by PBH's physical throughput ceiling.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Paro

Public transportation

No public bus or rail service directly serves Paro International. The main public bus station is in Paro town, a 10–15 minute drive and reached by taxi. In practice, tourists rely on their mandated tour operator transport; public transit is not designed for airport access.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue outside the terminal with fixed or negotiated fares (no meters). A ride to Paro town runs roughly Nu 300–500 (about US$4–6); the onward drive to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital, is approximately 50 km / 31 mi and takes 60–75 minutes.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental is not available to foreign tourists. Under Bhutan's tourism policy, all visitor travel must be organised through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, which provides a private vehicle with dedicated driver and licensed guide for the entirety of the visit.
