Indira Gandhi International is India's busiest airport and South Asia's largest aviation hub, handling 72.2M passengers (2024) across 169 destinations on 79 airlines. DEL has overtaken Mumbai as the subcontinent's primary gateway and now ranks inside the global top ten, driven by IndiGo's explosive growth — the airline operates the single largest domestic network anywhere in Asia out of Delhi — and Air India's post-Tata restructuring as India's flag carrier with new-fleet widebody orders concentrated at DEL. The airport operates three active terminals — the integrated T3 (international and IndiGo/Air India domestic, 5.4M sqft and India's largest), T1 (low-cost domestic), and T2 (secondary domestic). A fourth terminal and fourth runway are under construction to lift capacity toward 140M by 2030. Four runways include two parallels of 14,534 ft (4,430 m) and 14,436 ft (4,400 m) — among the longest in Asia — sized to handle the dense widebody rotations that define Indian aviation's post-pandemic recovery. DEL sits at 777 ft (237 m) elevation on the outskirts of southwest Delhi and is the principal connecting point between Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia on one side, and the Gulf, East Africa, and the Indian hinterland on the other. Air India and IndiGo operate Star Alliance and independent long-haul networks respectively, and DEL is the largest foreign station for most Gulf carriers (Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad) by frequency. The airport's GMR-led concession has produced repeated Skytrax and ACI world-best awards, making it the benchmark for Indian airport modernization.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from New Delhi

Public transportation

The Delhi Metro Airport Express (Orange Line) runs from T3 underground directly to New Delhi Railway Station in 19 minutes for ₹60, with trains every 10 minutes from 04:45 to 23:30 — one of the fastest airport metro connections in Asia. A feeder shuttle links T1 to the Dwarka Sector 21 interchange on the same line. DTC and cluster public buses from the GTC offer 24/7 budget service to Connaught Place and ISBT Kashmere Gate.

Taxis & rideshare

Prepaid taxi counters inside the arrivals hall (Meru, Mega, Delhi Traffic Police) sell fixed-fare coupons to avoid negotiation — central Delhi typically ₹500–700 in 30–50 minutes depending on traffic. Uber and Ola ride-hailing is the dominant option, with dedicated pickup lanes outside each terminal. Airport surcharges and toll fees are added to all fares.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, and local providers including Carzonrent and Zoomcar operate desks in the arrivals area of T3. Self-drive and chauffeur-driven vehicles are both offered; chauffeur service is the conventional choice for foreign visitors given Delhi's traffic intensity. An International Driving Permit plus home-country license is required, and pre-booking is recommended.
