Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), historically known as Dum Dum Airport, is the principal aviation gateway to eastern India and India's fifth-busiest passenger airport. Named for the independence leader born in nearby Cuttack, CCU handles more than 21 million passengers annually and serves a catchment of over 100 million people across West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, the Northeast and neighboring Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar. Operated by the Airports Authority of India, it is one of the oldest civil airports in Asia, with continuous commercial service since 1924. The airport occupies roughly 680 ha (1,680 acres) in Dum Dum, about 17 km (11 mi) north-northeast of central Kolkata, at an elevation of 16 ft (5 m). Two parallel asphalt runways operate in near-simultaneous mode: the primary 01R/19L measures 11,919 ft (3,633 m) and the secondary 01L/19R is 9,291 ft (2,832 m). The integrated Terminal 2, opened in 2013 and regularly extended, spans approximately 230,000 m² and handles both domestic and international traffic under a single roof with 128 check-in counters, 78 immigration desks and 18 contact stands; current master-plan work is pushing design capacity from 26 to 40 million passengers. Twenty-seven airlines connect CCU to 68 nonstop destinations including Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Paro, Yangon, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, as well as dense domestic networks flown by IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, SpiceJet and Akasa. CCU's historical role as the eastern terminus of the Imperial Airways Karachi–Kolkata route and its current position as the key feeder into India's Northeast keep it strategically significant far beyond its raw passenger count (2025).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Kolkata

Public transportation

West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) operates a dense network of Volvo air-conditioned buses from a dedicated terminal forecourt, including route VS1 to Esplanade, VS2 to Howrah, VS8 to Tollygunge and AC39 to Newtown/Salt Lake, with fares between 40 and 90 INR paid by cash or the Chalo mobile app. The Metro Railway's Yellow Line (Noapara–Biman Bandar) connects the airport directly into the Kolkata Metro network and is in phased commissioning; interim taxi transfers reach the existing Noapara and Dum Dum stations in 10 to 15 minutes.

Taxis & rideshare

Government pre-paid taxi booths in the international and domestic arrivals halls issue fixed-fare yellow Ambassador and No-Refusal tickets 24/7 and remain the safest option after late-night flights. Uber and Ola operate from designated pickup zones in the multi-level car park, typically 20 to 30 percent cheaper than prepaid. App-based WBTC e-taxis and premium fleets from Meru and Fast Track are also available; agreeing on meter use before departure is essential for any kerbside hire.

Rental cars

Self-drive rentals from Zoomcar, Revv and Myles can be collected at counters in the arrivals concourse, with vehicles pre-positioned in the adjacent car park. Chauffeur-driven hires from Savaari, Avis and local operators such as Wenz and Carzonrent are significantly more popular, reflecting Kolkata's dense traffic and one-way streets. An International Driving Permit is mandatory for foreign renters, and advance online booking typically halves walk-up rates.
