Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (LKO) is the principal aviation gateway to the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh - with 240 million residents, the most populous sub-national jurisdiction on Earth. Located in Amausi, 14 km (9 mi) south-west of central Lucknow at 410 ft (125 m) elevation on the Gangetic plain, LKO serves not only the state capital but also the surrounding cultural centres of Ayodhya, Varanasi and Kanpur. A single 8,996-ft (2,742-m) paved runway 09/27 accepts fully loaded widebody aircraft, essential for the airport's substantial Middle East and hajj traffic. LKO handles 46 routes to 32 destinations on 13 airlines (2026), with Indian domestic operators IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Vistara, Akasa Air and SpiceJet connecting Lucknow to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and all major domestic points. International service links Lucknow to Dubai (Emirates, IndiGo, Air India Express), Sharjah (Air Arabia), Jeddah and Riyadh (Saudia), Muscat (Oman Air), Bangkok (IndiGo), Singapore (Scoot) and London Gatwick (via Air India). The airport's Saudi routes carry heavy hajj and umrah volumes, and Uttar Pradesh accounts for one of the largest single-state shares of India's diaspora to the Gulf. The airport is named after former Indian prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh (1902-1987). Operated by Adani Airports since 2020 under a 50-year concession, LKO has been undergoing a multi-year modernisation adding a new international terminal opened in 2024 and a domestic terminal upgrade. Combined capacity now exceeds 8 million passengers annually, with the airport forming part of the UP government's push to turn the state into a tourism and logistics hub centred on the Ram Mandir pilgrimage circuit. Lucknow is famously the seat of the Nawabs of Awadh and the historical centre of Urdu literary culture, and LKO's terminal design incorporates Awadhi architectural motifs. The airport also serves military functions through the adjoining Indian Air Force station, which operates transport and liaison aircraft alongside civil traffic. Cargo throughput is driven by UP's pharmaceutical and leather exports.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Lucknow

Public transportation

CCS Airport Metro Station on the Lucknow Metro Red Line is located directly adjacent to the terminal, providing a fast and economical 30-minute link to the central Charbagh railway station and downtown Lucknow for fares of 10-60 INR. UPSRTC also runs air-conditioned city buses from outside the terminal on several routes.

Taxis & rideshare

Pre-paid taxi counters inside arrivals issue fixed-rate fares to Lucknow neighbourhoods - typically 400-600 INR to Hazratganj in 30-40 minutes. Uber and Ola operate from designated pickup zones and are usually 20-30% cheaper. Auto-rickshaws are available outside the terminal perimeter but fares should be negotiated before boarding.

Rental cars

Several national and local car-rental agencies staff counters inside the terminal. Chauffeur-driven hires are more common in India than self-drive, particularly for longer runs to Ayodhya (140 km / 87 mi) or Varanasi (290 km / 180 mi). Self-drivers need a home licence plus International Driving Permit; Indian traffic drives on the left.
