João Paulo II Airport (PDL) is the busiest airport in Portugal's Azores archipelago and the principal aviation gateway to the mid-Atlantic. Located on São Miguel island just 2 km (1 mi) west of central Ponta Delgada, the airport sits on a coastal shelf at 259 ft (79 m) elevation. Its single 8,192-ft (2,497-m) asphalt runway 12/30 is long enough to support fully loaded Airbus A321LR and Boeing 757 transatlantic operations, a critical capability given the islands' 1,400 km (870 mi) distance from mainland Europe and roughly 3,700 km (2,300 mi) from the U.S. East Coast. PDL handles 53 routes to 36 destinations on 22 airlines (2026) and is operated by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal (Vinci Airports). SATA Azores Airlines uses PDL as its main hub, serving Lisbon, Porto, Boston, Toronto, Oakland, Frankfurt and seasonal links to Praia, while low-cost carriers Ryanair and easyJet, plus TAP, Lufthansa and Finnair have added European routes since the archipelago's 2015 air-transport liberalisation. That deregulation unlocked a tourism boom: passenger traffic has roughly tripled in a decade, making PDL an unusually fast-growing island airport. The airport is named after Pope John Paul II, who visited São Miguel in 1991, and was originally built in 1969 on the site of a WWII-era Allied seaplane base. A 2019 terminal upgrade added new jet bridges and automated border kiosks. PDL also provides the Azores's primary air-cargo capacity, handling perishable pineapple, tea and fish exports that underpin the regional economy. The airport serves roughly 2.3 million passengers per year in peak season and is a critical lifeline for the nine-island archipelago, with SATA's Bombardier Q400 aircraft providing the inter-island network that links PDL to Horta, Terceira, Pico and Santa Maria. Due to frequent Atlantic weather, PDL is equipped with ILS CAT II approach capability and a specialised crosswind-abatement procedure that is practised year-round by crew types authorised on the route.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ponta Delgada

Public transportation

The Aerobus shuttle (line 70) runs every 20-30 minutes between the terminal and the central Coliseu Micaelense in Ponta Delgada, stopping at major hotels along the coast road. Fares are around 5 EUR one-way. Municipal bus line 101 also stops on the main road a short walk from arrivals at a lower fare but with fewer services.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue 24/7 at the rank outside arrivals. Ponta Delgada fares are metered with surcharges after 21:00, on Sundays and for luggage; a city-centre run is typically 10-15 EUR in under 10 minutes. Island-wide half-day tour fares are negotiated flat rates. Card payment is accepted at most licensed operators.

Rental cars

Ilha Verde, Autatlantis, Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Wayzor operate desks inside arrivals with pickup lots directly behind the terminal. A rental is the default way to tour São Miguel's roughly 160 km (100 mi) loop road and reach Sete Cidades, Furnas and the tea plantations. Reserve well in advance between June and September; compact hybrids dominate the local fleet.
