Yelizovo Airport is the principal airport serving Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative capital of Kamchatka Krai in Russia's remote Far East, and functions as the sole year-round commercial air gateway to the Kamchatka Peninsula — a 777-mile (1,250-kilometre) volcanic landmass spanning from the Bering Sea to the Sea of Okhotsk with roughly 300 volcanoes, including 29 active ones, and no road connection to the rest of Russia. The airport is located 18 mi (29 km) northwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at Yelizovo at 131 ft (40 m) elevation. A new passenger terminal opened in 2024 to replace the Soviet-era facility, substantially modernizing what had long been regarded as one of the most basic international-designated airport buildings in Russia. The airport handles 9 routes across 7 destinations through 4 airlines. Aeroflot, Rossiya, S7 Airlines, and UTair operate the core schedule dominated by the long-distance Moscow services — nine-hour trans-Russia flights to Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Domodedovo — plus services to Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Magadan, Novosibirsk, and regional Kamchatka destinations. The Moscow markets function as a lifeline-aviation product for a peninsula that can only be reached by air or sea from mainland Russia. International services, once including Alaska and Japan connections, have been materially reduced since 2022 following airspace and sanctions-regime changes. The airfield has three runways — a primary 16L/34R at 11,155 ft (3,400 m) on concrete, parallel 16R/34L also at 11,155 ft (3,400 m), and a short 735 ft (224 m) asphalt strip — configured jointly with the Yelizovo Air Base of the Russian Aerospace Forces, which operates fighter and naval-aviation units from the same field. The airport is one of the few civilian-military dual-use major airports in the Russian Far East. Kamchatka's dramatic volcanic and wildlife tourism economy depends entirely on PKC for visitor access, with bear-watching, volcano tours, and salmon fishing driving a measurable summer traffic peak.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Public transportation

Public buses #102 and #104 connect the terminal with the main Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky bus station (Avtostantsiya), with stops a short walk from the terminal exit. The journey takes approximately 60 to 70 minutes. Buses are economical and the preferred option for cost-conscious travelers.

Taxis & rideshare

Yandex Go (the Russian ride-hailing equivalent of Uber) is the most practical option with transparent upfront pricing. Official airport taxi counters in the terminal provide an alternative. The 18 mi (29 km) run into central Petropavlovsk takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on road conditions, which can be challenging in winter.

Rental cars

Several local Kamchatka-based rental companies operate at or near the airport; major international brands are not present. A 4x4 is essential for most of Kamchatka's roads outside the capital, which are gravel, unpaved, or seasonal. Advance booking is strongly recommended, and many operators arrange airport meet-and-greet.
