Krasnoyarsk International Airport (Yemelyanovo) is the principal aviation gateway to Central Siberia and the largest airport between the Urals and Lake Baikal by route network, serving the Krasnoyarsk Krai — Russia's second-largest federal subject by area, roughly 2.4M sq km (927,000 sq mi), spanning from the Mongolian border to the Arctic Ocean. Located 17 mi (27 km) northwest of Krasnoyarsk city center at 942 ft (287 m) elevation, KJA handles 100 routes across 71 destinations through 18 airlines — a destination count that exceeds many larger European secondary airports and reflects the vast Siberian catchment with few ground-transport alternatives. Krasnoyarsk was redeveloped as a strategic Russian hub in the late 2010s, with Aeroflot and its low-cost subsidiary Pobeda anchoring a transfer operation designed to compete with Novosibirsk for east-west Siberian connecting traffic. S7 Airlines, Ural Airlines, NordStar (the airport's home-based carrier and historic partner of Norilsk Nickel), Red Wings, Azur Air, and IrAero provide the bulk of remaining Russian domestic service. International operations include Turkish Airlines to Istanbul, seasonal service to China (Urumqi, Beijing), flydubai to Dubai, and periodic service to Armenia, Thailand, and Central Asia. Winter service is critical for the resource economies of Norilsk, Yakutia, and the northern oil and gas regions. The airfield operates a single asphalt runway — 11/29 at 12,139 ft (3,700 m) — capable of supporting all widebody operations including transoceanic ferry flights. A new passenger terminal opened in 2017, replacing Soviet-era facilities with a 54,000 sq m (581,000 sq ft) glass-and-steel structure designed to handle 5M passengers annually and accommodate up to 16 simultaneous aircraft at contact gates. Located on the Yenisei River watershed, KJA's position makes it a natural stopover on great-circle routes between East Asia and Europe, and the airport has periodically hosted technical stops and scheduled transit service for Chinese and Asian carriers.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Krasnoyarsk

Public transportation

Bus route number 635 provides a direct connection between the airport and Krasnoyarsk city center, with stops at the main Intercity Bus Terminal (Avtovokzal) and the Krasnoyarsk main railway station. The journey takes approximately 80–90 min depending on traffic along the Yemelyanovskoye highway. This is the most economical option, with fares paid directly to the driver in cash or by contactless card. Service runs roughly 06:00 to 22:30 with headways of 30–60 min. A direct Aeroexpress-style shuttle service is not currently in operation.

Taxis & rideshare

Yandex.Go is the dominant official taxi service, with booking via mobile app or at dedicated counters in the arrivals hall of the passenger terminal. The journey to Krasnoyarsk city center typically takes 40–60 min and costs approximately RUB 900–1,500 (EUR 10–17) depending on time and demand. Maxim and other Russian ride-hailing platforms also operate. Passengers are strongly advised to use the app or official counters rather than accepting rides from drivers soliciting inside the terminal, as unofficial fares can be several times higher.

Rental cars

Several Russian and international car rental companies maintain counters in the arrivals area, including Rentmotors, Europcar, and Sixt alongside local Siberian operators. Pre-booking online is strongly recommended given limited counter hours and vehicle availability. A valid driver license, passport, credit card deposit, and typically an International Driving Permit are required for foreign renters. Winter driving conditions from October through April require studded or winter-rated tires, which are standard on most rental vehicles during the cold season.
