Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is the busiest airport in the former Yugoslavia and Serbia's only commercial gateway at meaningful scale, positioned 11 mi (18 km) west of downtown Belgrade at 335 ft (102 m) elevation in the plain of Syrmia between the Sava and Danube rivers. BEG handles 161 routes across 99 destinations through 31 airlines and has been the fastest-growing airport in the Balkans over the past decade, with passenger volume more than tripling from 2.4M in 2010 to over 8.5M in 2024 following the 2018 Vinci Airports concession takeover and subsequent infrastructure investment program. Air Serbia operates BEG as its sole hub and the only long-haul-capable Balkan carrier, maintaining widebody A330 service to New York–JFK, Chicago (seasonal), and Shanghai–Pudong, alongside dense European, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern service. Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Austrian, Aeroflot, ITA Airways, Air France, LOT, Swiss, KLM, flydubai, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Egyptair, Tunisair, El Al, SAS, and Wizz Air (which operates a major base here) provide the backbone of international connectivity. Chinese carriers including Air China and Hainan have operated scheduled service to Beijing reflecting Serbia's visa-free bilateral relationship with China — unique among European countries and drawing substantial Chinese transit traffic. Two parallel asphalt runways — 12R/30L at 11,483 ft (3,500 m) and 12L/30R at 11,155 ft (3,400 m) — enable independent operations and support full widebody traffic. The airport currently operates two connected terminals (T1 and T2), with a major Vinci-led expansion underway that will add a new central pier, an integrated mezzanine, expanded contact stands, and roughly double retail floor area by 2027. BEG serves as the principal air-gateway for Serbia's 6.6M residents and also draws significant traffic from Republika Srpska, Montenegro, Kosovo, and North Macedonia thanks to price, frequency, and connectivity advantages over smaller regional airports across the Western Balkans.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Belgrade

Public transportation

The A1 Mini Bus runs express shuttle service between the airport and Slavija Square in central Belgrade every 30 minutes from 05:00 to 00:30 (journey 30 min; fare RSD 400 paid in cash to the driver, no advance booking). Public bus Line 72 operates a cheaper (RSD 150) but slower (40–60 min) route to Zeleni Venac Square in the city center with stops along the way, running every 20–40 minutes during daytime hours. Both services depart from stops immediately outside the arrivals hall.

Taxis & rideshare

Belgrade Airport uses a fixed-price zone voucher system to prevent overcharging. Passengers collect a voucher from the official Taxi Info desk in the baggage claim area, then present it to the driver at the taxi stand. Typical zone fares are RSD 1,800–2,500 (EUR 15–20) to central Belgrade (25–35 min), RSD 3,000–3,800 (EUR 25–32) to New Belgrade business district, and RSD 4,500–6,000 (EUR 38–50) to Zemun and more distant suburbs. This is the recommended method; unofficial drivers in the terminal should be avoided.

Rental cars

Several international and local car-rental companies — Hertz, Sixt, Avis, Budget, Europcar, plus Serbian brands Autotehna Rent a Car and Naksi — operate desks in the international arrivals hall of Terminal 2. Pre-booking online is recommended for better rates. A valid license with Latin-alphabet transliteration (or International Driving Permit), passport, and credit card deposit are required. Vehicles are stored in the adjacent short-term parking lot a short walk from the terminal.
