Los Cabos International is the principal airport for the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula and the primary gateway to the twin resort cities of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, handling roughly 7.5M passengers (2024) across 189 weekly routes to 120 destinations on 38 airlines — an extraordinarily high destination count for an airport of its size, driven almost entirely by U.S. and Canadian leisure traffic. SJD consistently ranks as Mexico's third-busiest airport after Mexico City (MEX and NLU combined) and Cancún (CUN), and it is one of the most North American-oriented airports in Latin America: roughly 75% of arrivals originate from the United States or Canada. SJD functions as a seasonal focus city for Alaska Airlines (which operates one of its densest Mexican networks here), a major destination for Delta, American, United, WestJet, Air Canada, Aeroméxico, VivaAerobús, and Volaris, and a significant charter and private-jet gateway. The airport sits 13 km (8 mi) north of San José del Cabo, serving a metropolitan resort corridor (the Corredor Turístico) that stretches 32 km (20 mi) along the Gulf of California coast and hosts more than 18,000 hotel rooms across ultra-luxury, boutique, all-inclusive, and mid-market properties. A single 9,843 ft (3,001 m) runway handles all traffic. The airport operates three terminals: Terminal 1 for international arrivals and departures, Terminal 2 for domestic traffic, and Terminal 3 added in 2019 specifically to handle peak U.S. and Canadian winter demand. SJD sits at 374 ft (114 m) elevation in the Sonoran Desert at the southern tip of Baja California Sur, a geography that has produced some of the highest resort property prices in Mexico and driven the airport's outsized network relative to its small local population of roughly 350,000 residents in the Los Cabos municipality.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from San José del Cabo

Public transportation

The 'Ruta del Desierto' public bus service provides the only meaningful public transit option, running along Federal Highway 1 (the Transpeninsular Highway) and connecting the airport with San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Passengers must walk from the terminal to the bus stop on the highway, which is a limiting factor for visitors with heavy luggage. Journey times are 20 minutes to San José del Cabo and 45–60 minutes to Cabo San Lucas. Service is infrequent relative to taxi or rental car alternatives.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis and shared shuttles are the dominant options for arriving passengers. Tickets must be purchased from authorized kiosks inside the terminal before exiting — fares are non-negotiable and set by zone, typically $30–40 USD to San José del Cabo and $60–90 USD to Cabo San Lucas. Uber and other ride-hailing services are not permitted to pick up directly at the terminal curb, which requires a walk off airport property to a designated pickup point.

Rental cars

Hertz, Avis, National, Sixt, Alamo, Budget, and Mexican operators including Fox and América have counters inside both terminals. After completing paperwork, customers take a free rental-company shuttle to off-site pickup lots — allow 20–30 minutes from terminal exit to vehicle. Advance booking is strongly recommended during the November–April peak season. Mexican auto insurance is mandatory and cannot be waived with foreign coverage.
