Bergen Airport Flesland is Norway's second-busiest airport after Oslo-Gardermoen and the principal aviation gateway to western Norway, serving the Bergen metropolitan area's roughly 290,000 residents and drawing catchment from Vestland county, parts of Rogaland, and the western Norwegian fjord region from Sognefjord south to Hardangerfjord. Located 11 mi (18 km) south of downtown Bergen at 170 ft (52 m) elevation on the island of Flesland in Bergen municipality, BGO handles 90 routes across 57 destinations through 18 airlines. The airport dates to its 1955 opening as a combined civil-military facility and is co-located with the Royal Norwegian Air Force's Bergen Flesland Air Station. BGO is a major operating base for SAS and the principal western Norway base for Norwegian Air Shuttle, the country's largest low-cost carrier. Widerøe, the regional carrier specializing in short-runway turboprop operations, runs extensive service to smaller Norwegian fjord and coastal airports that are inaccessible by road or require long ferry connections. Foreign carriers include KLM (Amsterdam), Lufthansa (Frankfurt, Munich), Air France (Paris–Charles de Gaulle), British Airways (London–Heathrow), Icelandair (Reykjavík), Finnair (Helsinki), SWISS (Zürich), LOT (Warsaw), Wizz Air, Ryanair, Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), and Eurowings. The North Sea offshore oil and gas industry drives a substantial portion of BGO traffic, with dedicated helicopter operations (primarily via CHC and Bristow) to offshore platforms operated from an adjacent heliport, plus heavy fixed-wing traffic supporting industry workers rotating from UK, Polish, and other European bases. The airfield operates a single asphalt runway — 17/35 at 9,810 ft (2,990 m) — capable of full widebody operations and used by transatlantic and long-haul charter flights as well as occasional transatlantic ferry movements. A new main terminal — Terminal 3 — opened in 2017, designed by Nordic Office of Architecture with distinctive rectilinear massing, extensive natural timber interior, and large glass façades framing views of Bergen's surrounding mountains and the North Sea. The airport was one of the first Norwegian facilities directly connected to a light-rail line, with the Bybanen (Bergen Light Rail) Line 1 terminating at the airport.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Bergen

Public transportation

BGO has two principal public-transit options. The Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) Line 1 is the most affordable, with the Flesland terminus located directly outside the terminal. Journey time to the city center at Byparken is approximately 45 min with trams every 8–10 min during daytime and a fare of NOK 42 single (2024/25 rates), paid via the Skyss app, contactless card, or ticket vending machine. The Flybussen airport coach offers a faster 20–30 min alternative with direct service to central Bergen hotels and the main bus station (Busstasjonen) at a premium fare of around NOK 180 single.

Taxis & rideshare

The taxi rank is located directly outside the arrivals hall. Primary providers are Bergen Taxi, Norgestaxi, and Taxi 1, with metered fares and 24/7 availability. Typical fares run NOK 500–700 (EUR 45–60) to Bergen city center (20–30 min depending on traffic), NOK 700–1,000 to the Haukeland University Hospital and suburbs, and NOK 1,200–1,800 to Voss or Sognefjord gateway points. Taxis are the most expensive ground option but convenient for travelers with heavy luggage or late arrivals. Pre-booking via phone or app is straightforward.

Rental cars

Major car rental companies — Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Budget, Enterprise — maintain service desks in the arrivals hall, with the rental car parking facility a short walk from the terminal. Pre-booking online is strongly recommended given limited walk-up availability and peak summer demand from fjord-touring visitors. A valid EU or internationally recognized driver license and credit card are required. Norwegian drivers should be aware of the extensive AutoPASS road toll network and strict parking regulations in central Bergen, with most rental vehicles pre-registered for AutoPASS charges. Winter tires are standard from November through April.
