Porto Seguro Airport, on Brazil's southern Bahia coast, is the country's principal resort-leisure gateway and one of the busiest regional airports in the Northeast, handling roughly 1.3M passengers annually with throughput peaks tied almost entirely to school holidays and Carnival. The 2,000 m (6,562 ft) asphalt runway sits barely 51 m (169 ft) above sea level less than 2 km from the historic town centre — among the shortest walking distances between an operational airport and a UNESCO-listed city core anywhere in the Americas. That proximity, plus Arraial d'Ajuda and Trancoso tourism, is what elevates a mid-sized municipal airport into the global 534. About 4 airlines operate 26 routes to 17 destinations (2026). LATAM, Azul, and GOL run the trunk domestic network to São Paulo (Guarulhos, Congonhas, Viracopos), Rio de Janeiro (Galeão and Santos Dumont), Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Confins, Salvador, and Recife. Seasonal charters from Portugal and Argentina add the limited international element. The route map is heavily weighted toward point-to-point southern origins — São Paulo and Porto Alegre deliver the majority of inbound volume — rather than connecting traffic. The terminal, operated by Zurich Airport Brasil under a 2018 concession, was expanded with a new arrivals hall and reconfigured check-in area in 2022. Porto Seguro's apron capacity of roughly a dozen narrowbody stands is fully utilised during peak weekends, and the airport's short runway limits operations to smaller narrowbodies — a constraint that has periodically driven proposals for extension onto adjacent federal land to unlock widebody leisure charters.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Porto Seguro

Public transportation

Viação Porto Seguro operates city buses from a stop a short walk from the terminal. Routes connect to the city centre, the rodoviária (bus station), and the northern beach strip (Orla Norte) including Taperapuã and Mundaí. This is the most economical option at roughly R$5–6 per ride.

Taxis & rideshare

Official COOMBAS airport taxis operate on posted fixed zone-based rates (check the kiosk). Fares to the city centre or passenger-ferry terminal for Arraial d'Ajuda are short (5–10 minutes). Uber and 99 rideshare pickups work from designated areas and are typically cheaper.

Rental cars

Localiza, Movida, Unidas, and several regional firms maintain counters in arrivals. Advance booking is essential during Carnival, July holidays, and New Year peaks. Most Trancoso and Caraíva visitors hire 4x4 given the unpaved approach roads south of the Buranhém river.
