Changsha Huanghua International is Hunan's primary air gateway and central China's fifth-busiest airport, handling 27.6M passengers (2023). Its ranking among mainland China's top-15 airports reflects Changsha's role as a Belt and Road logistics node and a manufacturing base for engineering machinery (Sany, Zoomlion) and electronics — industries that generate consistent business-travel demand beyond the leisure flows typical of provincial-capital airports. China Southern operates the largest base at CSX, with China Eastern, Air China, Hainan Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, and low-cost carrier Spring Airlines running significant secondary operations. International coverage has expanded rapidly since 2017, with nonstops to Bangkok, Singapore, Seoul, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Frankfurt, London, Sydney, and Nairobi — the last of which made CSX one of only three mainland Chinese airports with direct African service. Across 50 airlines the airport serves 106 destinations on 308 scheduled routes, an unusually high route-density-per-destination figure that signals strong domestic hub connectivity. Two parallel runways handle movements: primary 18L/36R at 12,467 ft (3,800 m) and 18R/36L at 10,499 ft (3,200 m), separated to allow simultaneous independent approaches. Terminal 1 (closed since T2 opened in 2011) was absorbed into a VIP and general-aviation function. Terminal 2 handles all commercial traffic with 70 gates across four concourses. A massive Phase 3 expansion approved in 2020 will add Terminal 3, a third runway of 12,795 ft (3,900 m), and an integrated ground-transport hub linking three high-speed rail lines and the Changsha Metro by 2026 — a build-out targeting 80M annual passengers and positioning CSX as a domestic hub for the central-China cluster. Elevation is 217 ft (66 m).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Changsha (Changsha)

Public transportation

Changsha Maglev Express links Terminal 2 to Changsha South Railway Station (CRH hub) in 19 minutes for ¥20 — one of only three operating maglev commercial lines in China. Metro Line 6 opened at the airport in 2022, reaching central Changsha in 45 minutes for ¥7. Airport shuttle buses serve 12 long-distance and suburban routes across Hunan province.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue at the southern end of Terminal 2 arrivals, with a ¥2 airport surcharge. Fares to Changsha city center average ¥100–¥130 with a 35–45 minute journey on the Huanghua Expressway. Ride-hailing through Didi is widely used and stages in a designated zone on the arrivals-level roadway.

Rental cars

Rental operations are limited relative to Western airports — typical of mainland Chinese hubs. Counters in the Terminal 2 domestic arrivals hall include eHi Car Services, China Auto Rental (CAR), and Shouqi Limousine. Vehicles are staged in the P1 multi-storey parkade, 4 minutes on foot from arrivals. Chauffeured service is more commonly used than self-drive.
