Xiamen Gaoqi International is the main airport for the southeastern Chinese coastal city of Xiamen and the home base of Xiamen Airlines, one of only two mainland Chinese carriers (along with Shanghai Airlines) operating as a SkyTeam subsidiary of China Southern. XMN handles roughly 24M passengers annually across 213 weekly routes to 111 destinations on 40 airlines, placing it among the top 20 mainland Chinese airports despite operating with only a single 11,155 ft (3,400 m) runway — a function of efficient turnaround scheduling and strong point-to-point demand from Fujian Province's 42M residents and the cross-Strait Taiwanese traveler market. XMN has historically been one of the most strategically positioned airports for cross-Strait traffic, sitting just 10 km (6 mi) west of Kinmen (ROC-administered) and serving as a principal entry point for Taiwanese business travelers and ethnic Chinese diaspora returning from Southeast Asia. Terminal 3 (domestic) and Terminal 4 (international) together span 340,000 m² (3.66M sqft), and the airport's 59 ft (18 m) sea-level elevation presents no high-altitude performance constraints. A replacement airport — Xiamen Xiang'an International — is under construction on reclaimed land nearby and scheduled to assume all operations by 2027, after which Gaoqi's land will be redeveloped. International connectivity is strongest to Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta, Tokyo, Osaka, and Seoul operate as daily markets, underwritten by Xiamen Airlines' extensive 737 and 787 fleet. XMN also serves as the Chinese gateway for the historical Fujian-descended diaspora in Southeast Asia, giving it an unusual concentration of VFR (visiting friends and relatives) long-haul traffic relative to its size.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Xiamen

Public transportation

Xiamen Metro Line 1 serves Terminal 3 at Gaoqi Airport Station, and Metro Line 3 serves Terminal 4 at Gaoqi Airport T4 Station — both providing direct 20–30 minute connections to Xiamen Railway Station and downtown Siming District. A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station is connected to Terminal 4 offering dedicated-lane elevated service across the city. Airport shuttle bus lines run from both terminals to Xiamen Railway Station, Xiamen North Railway Station, and the ferry terminals for Gulangyu Island.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue outside the arrivals halls of Terminals 3 and 4 around the clock. A ride to downtown Xiamen typically takes 15–25 minutes and costs CNY 30–60, one of the shorter airport-to-city transfers among major mainland Chinese airports. DiDi Chuxing ride-hailing operates from designated pickup zones at both terminals.

Rental cars

Hertz, Avis, Shenzhou Zuche, and eHi Car Services operate counters in the arrival halls of both terminals. Foreign visitors typically need a temporary Chinese driver's license converted from their home-country license, as the International Driving Permit is not recognized by mainland Chinese authorities. Chauffeur-driven rentals are the practical alternative for most overseas travelers and are offered at the same desks.
