Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) is the primary aviation gateway to one of China's most recognizable tourist landscapes — the karst peaks of the Li River valley — and the busiest airport in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Serving a catchment that includes Yangshuo, Longsheng and the Longji Rice Terraces, KWL has climbed into the top 50 Chinese airports by annual passenger volume, with traffic rebounding sharply toward its pre-pandemic peak of roughly 9 million passengers. The airport is operated by Guilin Liangjiang International Airport Co., a subsidiary of the Guangxi Airport Management Group. KWL sits in Lingui District about 28 km (17 mi) southwest of Guilin's city center at an elevation of 570 ft (174 m). A single 10,499 ft (3,200 m) concrete runway, paired with a newly rebuilt parallel taxiway, supports widebody operations up to Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 size. Terminal 2, opened in 2018 and covering approximately 80,000 m², was designed around the region's famous karst silhouettes and lifted annual capacity to 12 million passengers, with 62 check-in counters, 16 boarding bridges and dedicated international and domestic processors under one roof. Thirty-one airlines link KWL to 62 nonstop destinations, including international services to Seoul, Osaka, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong alongside dense trunk routes to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Chongqing. China Southern, China Eastern, Air China, Hainan Airlines, Spring and Juneyao anchor the carrier mix, with inbound leisure traffic from Southeast Asia and South Korea a defining feature of seasonal schedules that rarely fall outside the Chinese top-tier for tourist-driven operations (2025).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Guilin (Lingui)

Public transportation

Dedicated airport shuttle coaches operate as the backbone of public transit: Line 1 runs every 15 minutes to the Civil Aviation Hotel and Guilin Railway Station for about 20 CNY; Line 2 serves Guilin North Railway Station; and dedicated direct coaches depart for Yangshuo (about 90 CNY) and Longsheng. Tickets are sold at a clearly signed counter in the arrivals hall. There is no city bus or metro at the terminal, and the regional high-speed rail network is accessed via the shuttle-linked stations in town.

Taxis & rideshare

Official metered taxis queue at a marked rank directly outside arrivals and operate 24/7. A ride to central Guilin is typically 100 to 120 CNY and takes 40 to 60 minutes; Yangshuo is roughly 260 CNY. Drivers rarely speak English, so having the destination written in Chinese characters is strongly recommended. The Didi Chuxing ride-hailing app accepts Alipay and WeChat Pay and is the easiest way to summon a private car; WeChat-based official airport car services are also available.

Rental cars

China Auto Rental (CAR Inc.) and eHi operate counters in the arrivals hall, with a handful of local providers also represented. Rentals are practical only for drivers who already hold a Chinese driver's license or a short-term temporary license issued at the airport's traffic desk, since International Driving Permits alone are not recognized in mainland China. Chauffeur-driven day hires to Longji and Xingping are the more common option for foreign visitors and can be booked through the same counters.
