Pinto Martins International Airport is the main air gateway to Fortaleza, Brazil's fifth-largest city, and one of the geographically best-positioned airports in the Western Hemisphere for transatlantic transit: Fortaleza sits closer to West Africa and southern Europe than any other major Brazilian city, making FOR a critical hub for trans-equatorial route geometry. The airport handles 39 scheduled routes to 26 nonstop destinations operated by seven airlines, with a portfolio stretching from domestic trunk routes through Caribbean and European transatlantic links. FOR operates a single 9,039 ft (2,755 m) asphalt runway 13/31 at 83 ft (25 m) elevation. The airport is managed under a 30-year concession by Fraport Brasil, awarded in 2017 — the German airport operator's first major concession outside of Frankfurt, chosen in part to support Lufthansa's seasonal Frankfurt–Fortaleza service. Terminal modernization completed in 2020 expanded annual capacity from 6 to 12 million passengers. International significance comes from Fortaleza's selection by GOL Linhas Aéreas as its transatlantic hub, with Boeing 737 MAX 8 service to Lisbon, Miami, and Orlando launched in 2019 leveraging the aircraft's range in equatorial long-haul geometry. TAP Portugal, KLM, and Azul also operate transatlantic routes from FOR. Fortaleza's position as the closest major Brazilian airport to Paramaribo (Suriname), Cayenne (French Guiana), and Georgetown (Guyana) — all 5-to-6-hour flights from São Paulo by comparison — makes it a natural connecting point for Amazon-basin traffic, and the airport hosts the principal Brazilian Air Force northeastern command that supports Atlantic-area search-and-rescue. FOR is also distinguished by a direct light rail connection, unusual for a Brazilian airport.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Fortaleza

Public transportation

The VLT Parangaba–Mucuripe light rail line stops at Aeroporto station, a short covered walk from the terminal. The line runs every 15–20 minutes to the Parangaba bus and metro interchange, connecting to Line Sul of the Fortaleza Metro for access to the city centre and Praia de Iracema beachfront. Standard fare is BRL 4.00 with the Bilhete Único smartcard. Municipal bus line 066 (Papicu/Aeroporto) also serves the terminal.

Taxis & rideshare

Cooperativas Coopaero and Coopertaxi operate prepaid voucher counters in the arrivals hall, issuing fixed fares by destination zone. Typical fares to Meireles or Iracema (9 km / 5.6 mi) run BRL 50–70 over 20 minutes off-peak. Uber and 99 operate a designated pick-up zone outside arrivals and generally undercut cooperative pricing by 20–30%.

Rental cars

Localiza, Movida, Unidas, Hertz, and Foco are clustered in the arrivals hall with lots a short shuttle ride from the terminal. The CE-040 freeway connects FOR directly to Aquiraz and the beach-resort corridor toward Porto das Dunas. Self-drive requires a credit card with a BRL 2,500–4,000 hold capability; all agencies accept international licences for stays under 180 days.
