Fukuoka Airport is the principal aviation gateway to Kyushu and one of the busiest airports in Japan, consistently ranking in the country's top five by passenger volume and holding the distinction of being the closest major airport in the world to its host city's central business district. Located just 2.2 mi (3.5 km) east of downtown Fukuoka (Hakata) at 32 ft (10 m) elevation, FUK's extraordinary close-in position means travelers can reach the city center's Hakata Station by subway in 5 min — an airport-to-CBD connection time unmatched by any other international airport of comparable size. The airport handles 93 routes across 41 destinations through 44 airlines, the highest airline count among the airports in this batch. FUK is a secondary hub for JAL and ANA and a principal operating base for Kyushu-based Star Flyer, Solaseed Air, and the low-cost carrier Peach. The Haneda–Fukuoka route is one of the world's busiest airline city pairs, served by multiple carriers with near-shuttle frequency throughout the day. International service is heavily concentrated on East and Southeast Asia reflecting Fukuoka's geographic position at Japan's western edge, just 120 mi (193 km) from Busan, South Korea: scheduled operations connect to Seoul–Incheon, Gimpo (Seoul), Busan, Taipei–Taoyuan, Hong Kong, Shanghai–Pudong, Beijing, numerous secondary Chinese cities, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, and Honolulu. Korean and Chinese carriers including Korean Air, Asiana, Jeju Air, Jin Air, T'way Air, China Airlines, EVA Air, Air China, China Eastern, and Spring Airlines operate dense service. The airfield has two parallel runways — 16L/34R at 9,186 ft (2,800 m) in asphalt and 16R/34L at 8,202 ft (2,500 m) in asphalt — with the parallel 16R/34L runway having opened in 2024/2025 as a long-awaited capacity expansion eliminating the historical single-runway operational bottleneck that made FUK one of the most congested airports in Japan. The domestic terminal and international terminal operate separately on opposite sides of the airfield, connected by a frequent free shuttle bus — a dual-terminal configuration that creates operational complexity but reflects the airport's growth constrained by its urban site. The Fukuoka City Subway Kuko (Airport) Line terminates directly beneath the domestic terminal.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Fukuoka

Public transportation

The Fukuoka City Subway Kuko Line (Line 1) is the fastest way to the city center, with the airport station located directly beneath the Domestic Terminal. Journey time is just 5 min to Hakata Station (JPY 260) and 11 min to Tenjin Station (JPY 260) — one of the shortest airport-to-CBD rail connections anywhere. Nishitetsu local buses serve both terminals with onward city and regional connections, and highway buses run from the airport to destinations across Kyushu including Kurume, Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Beppu, and Oita. A complimentary shuttle bus runs every 10–15 min between the Domestic and International terminals, required for international arrivals wishing to use the subway.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxi stands are located directly outside the arrivals hall of both the Domestic and International terminals. Given the airport's extremely close position to the city center, taxi rides are a quick and practical option. Typical fares are JPY 1,500–2,500 to Hakata Station or Tenjin (15–25 min), JPY 3,000–4,500 to Momochi and the Fukuoka Tower area, and JPY 6,000–9,000 to Dazaifu and the western suburbs. Fares are metered at standard Japanese municipal rates with a modest airport-origin surcharge. Ride-hailing apps Go and S.RIDE operate at FUK.

Rental cars

Multiple car rental companies maintain counters in the arrivals area of both terminals, including Toyota Rent a Car, Nissan Rent a Car, Nippon Rent-A-Car, Orix, Times Car Rental, and Budget. After completing paperwork, customers take a shuttle bus to the rental agency's nearby office to pick up the vehicle. An International Driving Permit is mandatory for most foreign license holders, along with the original home-country license and passport. Kyushu's expressway network provides convenient access to Beppu, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, and other Kyushu destinations, making FUK a practical starting point for self-drive Kyushu tours.
