Chubu Centrair International is the principal long-haul gateway for central Japan and the flagship of the Chubu region — a manufacturing belt that accounts for roughly a fifth of Japan's industrial output and includes Toyota City, Nagoya, and the aerospace cluster around Komaki. Opened in 2005 on a purpose-built artificial island in Ise Bay, it replaced the overcrowded Nagoya Airfield and was designed as Japan's first airport with a fully integrated passenger experience: a single, terminal-wide shopping street was a deliberate response to Kansai and Narita's long walks. A single 3,500 m (11,483 ft) runway and two passenger terminals handle roughly 86 scheduled routes to 43 destinations across 39 airlines — a portfolio weighted toward intra-Asian business demand (Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, Bangkok, Manila) alongside a handful of European and North American trunks. Centrair is also a secondary hub for ANA and JAL and the primary base for low-cost carrier Jetstar Japan's Nagoya operation; cargo operations serve Boeing's 787 Dreamliner supply chain, with the center fuselage built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and ferried from Centrair on the Dreamlifter. The terminal complex is notable for its glass-roofed boarding bridges, an open-air observation deck running nearly the full length of the facility, and onsite hot-spring bathhouses — features that have helped it consistently rank among Skytrax's top regional airports worldwide. The elongated, narrow island layout minimizes noise over populated areas and permits 24-hour operations, a rarity in Japan. Passenger volumes recovered unevenly after 2020 and reached approximately 12.5M travelers in FY2023, still below the 2019 peak of 13.5M.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tokoname

Public transportation

The Meitetsu Airport Line connects Centrair to Nagoya Station in as little as 28 minutes on the μ-SKY limited express (1,250 JPY), with standard services running every 10–15 minutes. The station is integrated directly into the Access Plaza on Level 2. Centrair Limousine buses serve Kyoto, Gifu, Toyota City, and other Chubu destinations, and a high-speed ferry connects the airport to Tsu and Matsusaka in Mie Prefecture across the bay.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis and fixed-fare taxis operate from the Access Plaza on Level 2. A fixed-rate ride to central Nagoya runs approximately 14,000–16,000 JPY and takes 40–50 minutes via the Chita Peninsula Road. Ride-hailing is not generally available at Japanese airports; Uber Japan operates only a limited premium car service.

Rental cars

Counters for Toyota Rent a Car, Nippon, Orix, Times, and Budget are in the Access Plaza on Level 2. An International Driving Permit (Geneva 1949 Convention) is required for most foreign drivers alongside the original home-country license. The vehicle pickup lot sits adjacent to the terminal; no shuttle transfer is required.
