Kagoshima Airport, opened on its current inland site in 1972 after relocating from the coastal Kagoshima City strip, is the principal air gateway to southern Kyushu and the Satsuma peninsula. A single 3,000 m (9,840 ft) runway at 272 m (906 ft) elevation — sited on a plateau to clear the Sakurajima volcano's ash plumes 35 km to the south — handles narrowbody domestic and regional international traffic, with annual passenger throughput around 5.6M placing it consistently inside Japan's top fifteen. Japan Airlines, ANA, Solaseed Air, Skymark, Jetstar Japan, and Peach all operate from KOJ, feeding trunk routes to Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Osaka (Itami and Kansai), Nagoya, Sapporo, and Okinawa, plus a substantial island-hopping network to Amami, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabu, Yoron, Tanegashima, and Yakushima — destinations that have no viable surface alternative. International service to Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, and Hong Kong resumed in 2023–2024 after pandemic suspension. About 12 carriers serve 18 destinations across 31 scheduled routes (2026). Kagoshima's engineering signature is its ash-handling protocol: the airport maintains dedicated sweeper fleets and revised runway-inspection cadence during Sakurajima's frequent eruptive episodes, a system studied by volcanic-region airports worldwide. A natural hot-spring footbath on the public concourse — fed from the terminal's own onsen source — is the only such amenity inside any Japanese airport, and a frequent fixture in travel-press rankings of the country's regional facilities.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Kagoshima

Public transportation

Airport Limousine Buses (Iwasaki Bus and Nankoku Kotsu) depart every 10–20 minutes from stops 2 and 3 outside domestic arrivals. Direct service reaches Kagoshima-Chuo Station in about 40 minutes (¥1,400), continuing to Tenmonkan downtown (50 min). Other routes serve Ibusuki, Kirishima Onsen, Miyazaki, and Kumamoto.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue outside domestic arrivals. A trip to Kagoshima-Chuo Station runs roughly ¥12,000–14,000 (40–60 minutes via Kyushu Expressway). The shared-taxi Airport Liner offers fixed-fare service to specific city zones but requires advance reservation.

Rental cars

Toyota Rent-A-Car, Nissan, Nippon, Orix, Times, and Budget maintain counters inside the domestic terminal; vehicles are collected from nearby lots via short shuttle. An International Driving Permit is required. Self-drive is common for Kirishima National Park and the Satsuma Peninsula.
