Kansai International is Japan's principal 24-hour international airport and one of the most ambitious engineering projects in aviation history: the entire airport is built on a purpose-constructed artificial island in Osaka Bay, 38 km (24 mi) southwest of central Osaka, specifically to allow night operations that would be impossible at noise-constrained urban airfields. Opened in 1994 on a reclaimed footprint that continues to settle into the seabed, KIX sits at just 26 ft (8 m) elevation and is linked to the mainland by a single 3.75 km (2.3 mi) road-and-rail bridge. The airport handled roughly 31M passengers in 2024, with international traffic accounting for about 80% of the total — a share unmatched by any other Japanese airport and the reason KIX, despite being smaller than Tokyo Haneda or Narita, is considered one of the country's two primary global gateways. All three Japanese majors (ANA, JAL, and Peach Aviation, whose main base is KIX) operate here, supported by an exceptionally diverse international carrier mix including Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Finnair, and United. In total 74 airlines serve 177 scheduled routes to 83 destinations, with particularly dense links to Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City. Two parallel runways — a 13,123 ft (4,000 m) primary (06L/24R) and an 11,483 ft (3,500 m) secondary (06R/24L) on a second, later reclaimed island — handle the full widebody fleet. Terminal 1, designed by Renzo Piano, is the world's longest airport terminal at 1.7 km (1.1 mi), and Terminal 2 houses Peach and other low-cost carriers. KIX's location also makes it the fastest air gateway to Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe, served by direct Haruka and Rapi:t limited-express trains.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Osaka

Public transportation

Two rail operators share the station connected to Terminal 1. JR's Haruka Limited Express is the fastest option to Shin-Osaka and Kyoto, while the JR Kansai-Airport Rapid Service is a cheaper all-stations alternative to Osaka Station. Nankai Electric Railway runs the Rapi:t Limited Express direct to Namba in southern Osaka and a cheaper Airport Express on the same route. Limousine buses serve hotels and stations across Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and Nara, with stops on the first floor of each terminal. A high-speed bay-shuttle ferry even links KIX directly with Kobe Airport.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxi stands sit on the first floor of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Taxis are the most expensive option for trips to central Osaka or Kyoto — commonly 15,000–25,000 JPY — and are typically used only for late arrivals or by travelers with heavy luggage. Fixed-fare zone services are available and can be slightly cheaper than the meter on long routes.

Rental cars

Rental counters for Toyota Rent a Car, Nissan, Times Car Rental, Orix, and several international brands are consolidated in the Aeroplaza building connected to Terminal 1, with a free shuttle from Terminal 2. An International Driving Permit is required for most non-Japanese license holders. Advance booking is strongly recommended, particularly during cherry-blossom season and the Golden Week holidays.
