Gagarin International Airport is the principal airport serving Saratov and the wider Saratov Oblast region of Russia's Volga federal district, named after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who completed his historic April 1961 first-human-spaceflight mission by landing in a field near the village of Smelovka in the Saratov region. The airport opened in August 2019 as a complete greenfield replacement for the former Saratov Tsentralny Airport (RTW), which had operated from within central Saratov and closed simultaneously. Located 25 mi (40 km) north of Saratov at 103 ft (31 m) elevation near the town of Sabourovka, GSV is one of the few genuine greenfield major airports built in Russia in the modern era. The airport handles 13 routes across 11 destinations through 10 airlines. Aeroflot, S7 Airlines, Rossiya, Pobeda, UTair, Red Wings, Ural Airlines, Nordwind, and regional operators provide service. The network is dominated by the Moscow shuttle markets — Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo — alongside services to Saint Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Mineralnye Vody, and Yekaterinburg. The international route network has been materially reduced since 2022 following European and North American airspace restrictions, with remaining international service concentrated on CIS and selected Middle Eastern and Central Asian destinations. The single concrete runway 08/26 measures 9,843 ft (3,000 m), sufficient for widebody operations including periodic special-flight arrivals. The terminal, designed in a style architecturally referencing aerospace themes, has a declared annual capacity of roughly 1 million passengers. The airport is notably integrated with the rail network — a dedicated 'Gagarin Airport' suburban railway station (elektrichka) connects directly to the terminal by a covered walkway, making GSV one of the few Russian regional airports with a genuine rail link. The airport's ICAO identifier UWSG reflects its Volga region registration.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Saratov

Public transportation

Express Bus No. 101E (Э) operates between the terminal and Saratov's main railway station (Saratov-1) on a regular schedule. A parallel suburban 'elektrichka' train service runs from the airport's dedicated Gagarin Airport station — connected to the terminal by a covered walkway — to Saratov-1 railway station. The rail link is one of the most direct in the Russian regional network.

Taxis & rideshare

Yandex Go is the primary ride-hailing service, with bookings via mobile app offering upfront pricing. Official taxi counters are also located in the arrivals hall. The 25 mi (40 km) run into Saratov city centre takes approximately 60 minutes depending on traffic on the M-6 and P-158 routes.

Rental cars

Several Russian car rental companies operate service desks in the arrivals area. International brands have limited presence following the post-2022 market withdrawals. Advance booking is advisable during peak travel periods and on weekends; most transactions are domestic-card based.
